I still can't understand why no one mentions the Olympics even in their top 5.

NBC turned it into the International Gymnastics and Swimming Tournament.
The medal round in hockey is awesome.

Understable. But the Olympics are absolutely a top 5 sporting event. No way around it. You can watch almost every event either online or other channels so it's really not dependent on NBC coverage.

Honestly, I find the Euro championship more entertaining than the WC.
And Champions League is awesome. FA Cup provides us with the best elements of the CL and March Madness, with the upsets and all.
The Heineken Cup is awesome stuff.

No.
BUT. It is up there. I am not a huge basketball fan but will watch some of March Madness.
Sporting Event Greatness is proportional to how much "action" it can get. People can bet the shite out of the tournament. With office brackets etc. On top of Vegas.

The Ryder Cup is one of my personal favorites, and I'm surprised no one mentioned it.

I'm not a big soccer guy but I get sucked easily into the WC and sometimes the Champions league.
The WC is like the Olympics without the bullshite ceremonies and non-stop estrogen coverage - dancing/skating/gymnastics/volleyball.
That's how good the WC is - it can make me care quite a lot - and watch all the games - about a sport I usually don't care about. It has to be #1.
Sure we all watch the SB - but if my team isn't in it - I'm not thrilled.
And March Madness is fun but who knows these teams today and too much parity killed the excitement...david vs. goliath...seeing stars and stacked teams. America loves big name teams/powers and stars.
And the BCS killed the bowl season. I don't care if TCU beats Wisky in the Rose Bowl or Hawaii gets stomped by Georgia.

believe it or not, but march madness causes more "firings" at work than any other reason.

Biggest problem with the Ryder Cup in this country is it is smack dab in the middle of football season. If it was in the middle of summer it would get huge ratings.

I like March Madness but it's far from the greatest event. Mostly, it signals the end of the worst 2 months in sports that begins right after the Super Bowl ends.

No. Collage basketball is now watered down with players only staying 1 or 2 years. I was an avid college bb fan for years, but have lost interest because of lack of player recognition.
