Hockey gurus: how did the U.S. Beat Russia. In '80

Watching Miracle again tonight and have to ask how did the U.S. Beat Russia? A bunch of college kids taking on the best team in the world? Was it the fact that our guys trained for almost a year to beat the Russians, got lucky, had some innovative offense/defense, the Russian team looking ahead to the gold medal match, or were we just that good? If I remember correctly most of the players didn't have stellar pro careers after this.

Tikinov pulled the greatest goalie in a generation
The US team was motivated by a tyrant
The players on the US had very good NHL careers, not all but some.
Craig stood on his head at times.

It was a miracle.
On ice.
On ice.

I'm not a hockey guy but seems if your goalie gets hot you have a pretty good chance of winning.

Can neither confirm nor deny whether sorcery was involved

Though the Hockey Gold was impressive and unexpected. It was not the most improbable and astonishing thing of the games.
Eric Heiden winning all 5 speed skating distances is just insane.
It's like Usain Bolt winning the mile half mile and 10k in the same Olympic game.

The team got to train longer than most of the other teams in the tournament.
The Soviet team was having internal struggleS before the US game. They struggled in their two games leading up to it
Still remarkable win though and not sure if we will see something like it again

Wrong and wrong. The hockey team winning gold was WAY more improbable. I think the Russians beat us by something like 10 goals a few months earlier. Heiden's skating feat isn't even remotely similar to Bolt winning a 100 meter and 10k.

Wrong it had never been done before or has it been done since. That is way more impressive.
The hockey win was more political motivated in repeating the stories.
But as far as improbable it's Heiden

I guess kind of a perfect storm of talent, bad opposing coaching move, training and motivation.

Tikinov made a series of terrible decisions and Jim Craig stood on his head. The US was massively outplayed and honestly... got lucky. But luck is the residue of design.

Home ice helped, too, I'm sure.
Not to a great degree, but at least a little

Didn't he break the klm line up for some reason also?

It's pretty tough to have to play with the lead for ten minutes against a better team. I wikid the game and it said Herb kept pushing with the lead rather than playing defense and sitting on it.

The US and A had a want.

And this

People talk about the goalie switch but neither of them or Tikhonov are responsible for the best hockey team on the planet only scoring one goal in the final two periods against a college team.
