There is a rumor/conspiracy thought out there that Herb Brooks threw that 10 goal game on purpose. It was a last minute addition to the schedule and Tikhonov admitted later that specifically that game was a huge reason the Soviet players and coaches completely disregarded the possibility they would lose to the US.

Who knows. I don't think Brooks ever confirmed that before he died.

Makes a lot of sense if it was a last minute thing.

Herb seems crazy enough to do something like that.

What is the hockey opinion of Herb crazy or great coach? I'm curious what those players thought of him after it was over.

Herb jammed the Russians up in the neutral zone. They hated dumping the puck in, he stacked them up, slowed them down and took away the odd man attack spots. Craig standing on his head was going to be a given if the US had any chance.

Look, it was very improbable. I mean if the US played Russia 10 times, Russia would win at least 9 of them. But not that night.....

A friend of mine played on that team. He said that Herbie drove them hard, but he had nothing but respect for him after the Olympics.

Following a 1960 loss to the U.S. the Soviets went 27-1-1 and outscored opponents 175-44.

During that time they beat the U.S. a combined 28-7.

I forget the stats about their stud goalie.

It's hard to put into words how massive of an upset it was. I sorta like to think the U.S. won because they lived by Dutch's quote from The Predator.

"If it bleeds you can kill it."

(I'm aware the movie came out later.)

There's a documentary out on Netflix from the Russian perspective about that game: Of Miracles and Men

I'd highly recommend it

I think it was a 30 for 30. Yeah it was fantastic. Really interesting seeing things from the Soviet perspective.

Wrong it had never been done before or has it been done since. That is way more impressive.

The hockey win was more political motivated in repeating the stories.

But as far as improbable it's Heiden

You don't know what improbable means.

I heard Herb on an interview once and he said it started the minute they picked the team. He knew he wouldn't have better "hockey players" than many of the other teams, especially the Russians.

So he went with guys that were fast as hell that were pretty good, not great hockey players.

Kinda like Tark's early UNLV teams.

I believe doing this successfully -- i.e changing up tactics and lines such that the on-ice product is appreciably worse -- with players who are playing as hard as they can is not as doable as you think. Hockey is a free flowing game. The coach isn't signaling in plays.
