I coached for almost 30 years and while we think we know our players very well, you never know what might happen in the heat of the moment. I know I made it clear to my players that the only interaction with officials was ONLY through me and I did bench players who tried to argue with officials. Now this doesn't say that I didn't have my players backs, but as an adult, I was supposed to be the responsible party in these situations.

I was also a basketball official for 25 years and in the rare occasion that a player started to bark at me, I didn't hesitate to penalize with a technical foul or go straight to the coach to remedy the situation. I would listen to the coach because he/she was the person in charge and supposed to be the responsible party during an emotional situation.

Both lead with their helmets intentionally. Would Consider a helmet a deadly weapon and bump up the charges, fricking scum bags.

If in fact the players are claiming racial slurs then you can bet your a$$ ol Al Sharpton will come running to their defense. I highly doubt this has any merit to it. It's an excuse that will soon justify homicide in the very near future.

Never seen it in FB but I have seen a form of it in baseball more than once.

Where a catcher will claim he was crossed up and let the ball bean the umpire.

According to media reports, the two players have been suspended from the team and from school. There will be a "due process" hearing on Tuesday as the investigation continues.

Should have been kicked off the team and expelled immediately.... Let the due process figure out the criminal charges.

There is no excuse whatsoever for what those two did. I don't care if the ref told them "I hope your parents die in a fiery crash", there is no justification for that attack.

Justified? C'mon man. There is nothing justifiable about the actions of those two guys.

JetTiger...you're an a-hole. Nothing the refs did, whether made a bad call or not, can be considered justification. Sorry, I've got to say it again...you're an a-hole.

I was thinking the same thing, arent we assuming the racial slur was the "N" word? it is San Antonio right?

Regardless, words spoken dont mean you can do that, and I also find it hard to believe an official would ever say that to a player anyways

And right on Cue, the race card is being played. Players claiming the Ref used racial slurs.

Does anyone have a source to that? I can't find any article on the incident that makes that claim

Tweets from kids....probably trying to find a way to "justify" the situation.
As far as the possibility of criminal charges,
Yes

The Secretary for the Austin chapter stated the Umpire wants to press charges....we'll see if the UIL talks him out of it.

John Jay had FOUR players ejected during the game. Just prior to the incident, one for hitting the opposing QB after he took a knee at the snap and the other for throwing a punch.

Hope that helps

Edit to add: Pereira calls for prosecution of high school players who hit umpire

quote:

“It is the most despicable act I’ve ever seen on a football field,” Pereira said in a video posted at TheBigLead.com. “It is premeditated, and it is something that needs to be dealt with severely. Hey, the school district is investigating. So is the athletics association, and they have suspended the two players involved. That’s not enough. Criminal charges need to come — without question.”
