I played soccer a ton growing up and I was really good. Goal keeping was absolutely terrifying. Its so much harder than people realize to play goal keeper and I hated doing it. Especially when there is a ton of traffic in the box. The spectacular saves people show where its a diving save on a long hit are the easiest. You see it coming a long ways away and you just have to have the athleticism to get to the shot.

A decent male athlete with size would be better than what Japan out out there. Consider the size differences alone and you already have a huge advantage as a man. 6'4,220 versus about 5'7 and 135 lbs...

PKs are a guessing game and not a good way to grade goalie performance.

The most difficult part would be consistent punting and kicking, as well as, tactically assisting the back line. You actually need to understand the game to do the latter.

I interned at UF Amin the strength and conditioning department. I worked with women's soccer more than any other sport given the timing.

Sometimes I'd have to play pickup as we'd have 3 mini games at once going. These girls were fricking filthy. I got my arse handed to me in the regular.

This. I played with or against some of the LSU girls in co-ed in Baton Rouge.

Cliff's Notes: frick that.

I don't care what kind of athlete this guy is, was or thinks he is. A group of scholarship college freshman girls would make this guy quit in under 30 minutes.

I couldn't hold my own in soccer. But I don't care what anyone says, I would beat most WNBA point guards in a game of 1v1.

Japan had a fricking near 7 footer as a backup goalie. That alone shows you size has little to do with or she would've been out there instead of who they did have out there

I catch some shite here because in these threads, I usually say I can to whatever feat is up for debate. I've spent 90% of my life being an athlete and have a great idea of what I can and can't do.

I'm pretty sure there's no way in hell I could be a goalie at the World Cup level for a women's team. I don't think being a goalie is all about seeing a ball screaming at you and going to stop it from finding the back of the net. To be good at it I'd imagine that you HAVE to have the years and years of experience of seeing soccer balls kicked from every angle from every distance. What I'm saying is, we'd all be pretty clueless mentally as to what to expect. Our physicality would only help so much.

Being a goalie seems like a skill that one needs tons of reps and experience with, similar to hitting a baseball.

Interesting. I had the exact opposite outcome with the same experience.

I don't get OP's question. Soccer involves a great deal of skill that one either has or they don't have. You being a guy, even an athletic guy wouldn't help you out at all if your skill level isn't at least close to your competition's.

So how would you do against a college level softball pitcher?

I see your point, but none of what I saw last night impressed me.

I hear you. My wife got scholarship to play D2. I consider myself a very good athlete, and I definitely have well above average hand-eye coordination and reflexes. I have stood in goal for her to practice PKs, and it is fricking TERRIFYING. She also considers herself to only be about average at PKs. Reading which way she will go is almost impossible, and even when I do, there have been plenty of times where I get a hand on it and the ball still hits the back of the net.
However, when we actually make it to a pickup game, I do much better. But average Joe saying they could block a PK against the world's best women.... LOL.

I'm sure a reasonably athletic male would do much better.

PKs are damn near impossible for the best professionals to stop and are therefore a terrible gauge for overall performance.

Apparently I'll find out if I'm right or wrong about my assumption next week. I've been invited by a coworker to try out my skills against his daughters team, who supposedly has some D1 level talent.

I hope my mouth didn't overload my arse on this one, lol

Interesting... Please report back after.

And it should be noted that a youth team with some D-1 talent isn't the same as a world class women's team... Just saying.

But still, I'm interested in seeing how you do so please report back

None of my lesbian friends know any of the women on the World Cup team,so I got to take what I can get. I hope they don't embarrass me.

I absolutely agree. That's why I mentioned that it went much better in goal just during standard gameplay. Someone earlier had mentioned stopping 7 out of 10 PKs as being no problem.
