Torn ACL on a freak play at 22 years old. He played at least 153 games per year for the following 9 seasons (140 in 1995 due to the strike.

if Chipper had been a Yankee for life people would talk about him as potential lock first ballot HOFer and we'd get Jeter level hero worship.
Bingo he is not overrated and possibly underrated by people not from the south.

You guys can say what you want with that playoff streak though and only one WS championship he is a huge disappointment. Personally I think Championships matter, most of you might be fans of disappointment though.

This isn't basketball.

Chipper absolutely did his part in the postseason too. .287/.409/.487 line in over 400 playoff plate appearances.

Career postseason:

.287/.409/.456, 13 HR, 47 RBI

Pretty solid. Not his fault the Braves only won 1...this is baseball, not golf.

Yeah, The Streak is one of the great records in baseball and Ripken did change the shortstop position but he's not a better player than Chipper Jones. Statistically, it's not really even close.

comparing the stats of a SS from the 80's to a 3B of the late 90's and early 00's.

As far as peak seasons go not close Cal's top 3 seasons>>>>>>>Any of Chippers seasons

Oh and fielding wise Chipper was a liability while Cal Ripken is one of the most dominant fielders in the history of baseball.

Fully agreed. Jeter is probably the most overrated player I've ever seen.

And you are probably the dumbest poster I've ever seen. When Jeter retires only 5 other players in the history of the game will have more hits than he will. Add 258 HR's from the leadoff position. Factor in that he's one of the greatest clutch performers in MLB history. You act like the fans vote on the Gold Glove award. The coaches and players do. There's a reason that players like Salvador Perez, Alex Gordon, Eric Hosmer, Nolan Arenado and Andrelton Simmons won Gold Gloves last year......and it's not because they played in the largest TV markets.

And by the way, I'm a Red Sox fan.

Don't know much about Baseball huh?

You got John Farrell on the radio calling him one of the top 3 players of this era. Which is beyond hilarious.

The whole playoff performer thing is mostly hype. Beltran is a far better playoff performer than Jeter is but you never hear about it.

102 from the lead-off position. Nearly always hit in a stacked line-up, where you'd much rather throw Jeter a fastball than face the guy behind him.

The guys numbers are that much different from Craig Biggio's who'll never be mistaken for an all-time great.

Is Jeter a great player? Yes. All-time great? Not so much IMO.

Oh, and Jeter has been in the negative in defensive WAR for all but three of his seasons, for a total of -9.4. He's a terrible defender.

To the contrary, Ozzie Smith had a career 43.4 DWAR.

The gold glove vote is laughable at several positions every season.

Jeter's Gold Glove Undeserved

You could post that link for nearly all of his GG's.

Lastly, how many individual seasons could you honestly say that Jeter was the best SS in the game?

You can say that several times for all-time greats like Pujols.

I think its funny that the talking heads have Chipper Jones as a surefire first ballot HOF, while Bagwell is looking at his 4th ballot despite VERY similar numbers.

He gets the huge benefit of being compared to other third basemen instead of first basemen (even though he was not a good defender). Bagwell is getting a raw deal IMO. He and Jones would've both hit a few major milestones if not for injuries at the end of their career.

ETA: Not overrated at least in the Northeast and Midwest. I have no idea about the South. I'd compare Jones to someone like Glavine. A first ballot HOFer but probably not the best player on his ballot (just an example, I have no idea who is on the ballot his year).

Far better?

Beltran .333 lifetime
Jeter .308 lifetime

Beltran has 60 career post season hits. Jeter has 200. The next closets is Bernie Williams with 128. Jeter hold the post season career records for most games, most at bats, most plate appearances, most total bases, most runs scored, most hits, most singles, most doubles, most triples and he also happens to be #3 all time in HR's and #4 all time in RBI. That's a little more than "hype".

So it's safe to say that beltran would have FAR surpassed those numbers had he had the benefit of playing in New York his entire career.

He's an all-time great based on his offensive production as a shortstop. No modern era player that played his entire career at shortstop come close to that production.

No modern day player has been as terrible at SS and stayed there his entire career like as Jeter has.
