but the guy was no Cal Ripken Jr. like lots of folks from the South would have you believe.

If not for The Streak, we would think much less of Ripken. Hall of Famer, sure, but Chipper was just as good.

Chipper put up better stats across the board than Ripken with roughly 2500 less career at bats.

If you think he's on Cal Ripken's level then yeah he's vastly overrated.

Yeah, The Streak is one of the great records in baseball and Ripken did change the shortstop position but he's not a better player than Chipper Jones. Statistically, it's not really even close.

I'm not saying that Chipper is not a Hall of Fame type player, but folks in the South act like he is on the same level as Bonds, Ruth, Aaron, Ripken, Williams, etc.

2 of those are not like the others ... who the hell thinks ripken and bonds are on ruth/aaron/williams' level? ...

bonds is a steroid bitch ... yeah, he was very good before the juice, but his subsequent juicing discounts all that ... ripken isn't on the level jones is, if anything ... and i'm neither a braves fan nor a baseball fan in general ...

if Chipper had been a Yankee for life people would talk about him as potential lock first ballot HOFer and we'd get Jeter level hero worship.

no he is not overrated.

There is no question he already is.

He will be a first ballot inductee. I don't think there's any doubt about that.

You guys can say what you want with that playoff streak though and only one WS championship he is a huge disappointment. Personally I think Championships matter, most of you might be fans of disappointment though.

I think its funny that the talking heads have Chipper Jones as a surefire first ballot HOF, while Bagwell is looking at his 4th ballot despite VERY similar numbers. Bagwell gets the "well he was a slugger during the 90s" treatment. Chipper seems to get a pass on that.

Fully agreed. Jeter is probably the most overrated player I've ever seen. If he played 19 years for Pittsburgh, he'd have 0 gold gloves, a handful of all-star appearances, and at best would be a possible Hall of Famer, but people would state that he was never even the best at his position in a given year.

Not overrated. Chipper didn't even become injury prone until his mid 30's, like most non-juicing baseball players do.

lol, he missed his first season to injury
