I haven't listened to that show much at all over the years and never on purpose. It always seemed like the extent of their sports knowledge/research was watching Sports Center and maybe a prime time game here and there.
Once you hear them talk about a sport or a team you actually follow you realize real quick that they don't know what the frick they are talking about.

If a show is ever "carried" by Mike Golic it undoubtedly would have to be the worst show in the history of shows.

I've never enjoyed Mike and Mike. Do not hate 'em, just find them milquetoast and unsatisfying like a bland scrambled egg married to a rubbery biscuit breakfast..their shtick is lame and too mainstream, they're like The Today Show(For Sports People) or other PC fodder for folks waking hours of easing into the day..
That ESPN has them as crack-of-dawn radio, is by design..the main courses and Tabasco of the day(Cowherd, SVP/Rusillo,etc) are yet to come.

For all the hate of Mike and Mike everyone sure knows what their points are.
I watch Mike and Mike in am getting ready to go to work. Yes they're dumb at times, but so is every radio show.
The only three shows I enjoyed were Tony Bruno, Kylie and Booms, and the Rome show in the late 90's to about 2004.
The best interview I have ever heard was the Rome interview of Sheldon Kennedy. Crack on Rome all you want, but that one interview legitimized him in my view. If you don't know about Kennedy and that interview I suggest you research it. I believe you will appreciate Rome as a journalist.

I like Tony Bruno(and the inner-Philly in him), he was great on Fox in the 90s and early 00s, haven't caught him years. Know he is back in Philly now?
