Unnecessary roughness should cover any particularly dangerous play. The Barr hit was borderline, but certainly not one that I'm willing to change the rules over. At some point you're talking about fundamentally changing the sport.

After reading what you posted of the rule, I don't totally disagree. Maybe it's just a decree on how that will be called going forward, or tweaking the wording a bit. If the defender sees that the ball has been released, they should consciously make an effort to minimize the amount of contact with the quarterback as opposed to trying to "lay one on em". And I say this acknowledging that Clay Matthews is one of the worst offenders on this...assuming he could ever get to the QB again.

This would require the defense to go after the QB with less than 100% effort. They'd have to be ready to pull up in an instant. Impossible unless you're putting in less effort. Bad rule. Too bad Rodgers got hurt, but it's football.

When I played in high school I dealt with it thus:
If you fricking hit me late again I will fricking kill you right here on the field.
They would say, " oh I was running so hard, I could not help it."
I said,"that's great, I will still kill you."
No one did it twice.

This is funny. Knowing your posting history makes it twice as funny.

I'm sure that's how defensive linemen spoke to an opposing QB.

seriously if they change these rules they need to legit make the compromise of making "2 hand touch tackles" of the QB legal

if you want to argue safety? fine. this helps with safety but makes QBs have to play legit with the rules changes

So you're saying that defender could in no way have gone full speed until he saw the ball leave Rodgers hand? And that there was absolutely nothing he could do other than full on tackling him? If so, I disagree. Just like defenders have learned to avoid crushing a guy who is down by jumping over the pile, veering off, or striking a glancing blow. They made it illegal and guys adjusted.

Wouldn't matter in this case because the guy, giving 100%, didn't get to Rodgers until clearly after the ball was out.

Give them these rules, but don't allow the QBs to leave the pocket or run the ball past the LOS.

Give them a halo, but don't give them a moving halo

I think after NFL should put a pink jersey on the QB and render him hitless.

I think you guys are exaggerating the extent of any rule tweaks. They're simply saying, if the defender sees the ball out, he can't drive the quarterback to the ground. If a quarterback is pump faking, he's still got the ball.

The entire point of a pump fake is to deceive the defense into thinking he doesn't have the ball anymore

If these rules were in place a few years ago Romo would still be alive.

I wasn't shocked to see that PFT proposed this insane rule change

unfortunately I think Goodell reads PFT and is quite the fan.

florio wants a player conduct policy, goodell creates a player conduct policy

florio demands new OT rules, that shite happens

the only thing florio hasn't willed into reality with his whining, crying and virtue signaling is a redskins name change...and kaepernick landing on a roster.

he has a lot of juice for whatever reason. he and peter king must have pictures of goodell murdering kids.

The hit was unnecessary and avoidable. I would rather the hit below the waist be legal and this one be illegal. He knew Rodgers got rid of the ball and could have let up. Even after he made contact he knew the ball was released and still decided to pile drive him in to the turf. Barr is a professional athlete we’re talking about not some degenerate roid head.

I don’t watch football hoping to see blood or somebody get knocked out. They aren’t gladiators.

I’m not even a Rodgers fan.

Hell I bet the Minnesota ML so this helped!

If you are remotely an NFL fan you should agree that it was avoidable. The NFL is better with Rodgers and the hit should be illegal.
