I think it may be time for a radical rule change, one that makes hits like Barr’s illegal. It may be time for the NFL to consider dramatically expand the roughing the passer rules, and treat quarterbacks like kickers and punters: Basically, you can’t hit them at all once they’ve thrown a pass.

I know, I know, you’re going to tell me I’m soft and weak and ruining the game of football, and that we might as well just play flag football if we’re going to do that. And I’m here to tell you I’ve heard it all before.

I heard the same thing when the NFL changed the roughing the passer rules to prohibit low hits on quarterbacks after Tom Brady suffered a season-ending knee injury in 2008: “How can defensive players possibly be expected to avoid those hits?” But defensive players adjusted, and it’s now unremarkable that those hits are penalized.

I believe the same thing would happen if the NFL dramatically changed the roughing the passer rule. Yes, at first it would seem wrong to see defensive players penalized for putting a shoulder in a quarterback’s chest after he throws a pass. But defensive players would get used to it, coaches would get used to it, and fans would get used to it.

And it would make the game safer for the quarterbacks, the most important players on the field. Is it really a good thing for the NFL that Aaron Rodgers might miss the entire season? Are hits like Barr’s really so fundamental to football that we can’t outlaw them for the health of quarterbacks and the good of the sport? I don’t think so

It's an interesting discussion to have, and I do believe this is where we're headed.

This is losing the NFL more viewers than the kneeling.

But is it worth it if you're protecting your QB? We all complain when we get matchups like the texans v raider playoff game last year. And I'm just playing devils advocate here.

If this happens, force QBs to wear pussy hats instead of helmets and make it a penalty to have them tackle the ballcarrier on an interception or fumble.

Probably linked together. I'm sure a lot of people were barely holding on while getting pissed about the pussification then gave up on it completely when the kneeling shite started.

This would allow QBs like Newton, Watson, etc. to just stick the ball in the air, force the defenders to slow up pursuit, and then run untouched for 30 yards.

That hit should be illegal, absolutely. There was no need to drive him into the ground that late after the throw.

I'm okay with this rule in the tackle box. It won't work so well outside the tackle box. But there is also absolutely no reason defenders should be allowed to drive qbs into the ground when they don't have the ball. That has never made sense.

That's what I was thinking. You can already see defensive players give up when QBs look they are going to slide, then the QB keeps running. That's BS. If you're a player, then you're a player. Take the hit.

blah blah blah...I get the roughing the passer and defenseless receiver rules. I'm talking about changing yet another rule due to one hit on one player.

It was an avoidable hit for sure. I dont really by most instances of the "its hard not to do X in real time" argument made by defenders. I think defenders dont get enough blame for not adjusting to the new rules.

When they don't really allow hitting in practice anymore it's probably tough to get used to the rule changes on real time hits in games

If that was the hit that hirt him and they change a rule then they are just hurting their product. He just fell on him. It wasn’t malicious or he didn’t spear him. Just a normal play and it resulted in an injury.

That type of hit is on the fringe of the rules, but it is legal. There's little opportunity to get a clean hit on a QB. This was one of them. No one wants to see an injury, but that's the risk a QB takes to stand in the pocket or roll out to buy time to make a play.

Rodgers lives within the rules. He's great at catching the defense in a substitution with too many men on the field. He's great at scrambling and sliding. If memory serves he has a good hard count. All legal, from which he derives a benefit.

So the defense played within the rules. Rodgers got hurt. It happens.

Being able to know you're going to take a hit like that and still throw a perfect ball is a part of what separates decent quarterbacks from elite ones.

its obvious that you can bring someone to ground without intentionally crushing their shoulder.

its also clear to me that lots of hits on QBs are well after the throw and that could be called roughing too although its harder to call.

When I played in high school I dealt with it thus:
If you fricking hit me late again I will fricking kill you right here on the field.
They would say, " oh I was running so hard, I could not help it."
I said,"that's great, I will still kill you."
No one did it twice.
