QBs are football players and are subject to the violence inherent in the game. As a result, they are prone to suffer injuries. GMs should take that into account when building their roster.

I tend to agree with others that say the NFL should look into rule changes to devalue the position.

Get off my lawn!!!!

For every 1 of those, there's probably a ton of examples of QBs getting hurt and seasons being wrecked back in the day.

Al Davis knew the writing on the wall back in the 70's...

"Within the first 5 to 10 plays of the game, the other team's quarterback must go down...and he must go down hard."

It is called tackling

You're supposed to tackle the guy with the ball, not the one without it.

And QBs are the one player on the field who touches the ball every single play and whom the defense is trying to crush. So it stands to reason that they would be at an increased risk of injury that the league would try to minimize.

If you even make a rule that says if the defender can clearly see that the ball has been released, he can hit him but not drive him into the ground, that would make a big difference.

If the defense can't legally hit a QB in the split second after the ball is thrown, they will be entirely too hamstrung in their ability to play defense, especially on any reasonably athletic QB.

I would love a world where I can watch Aaron Rodgers instead of this Hundley guy.

Fix it, Goodell!!!

See my post above. I don't think you remove them getting hit completely.

There was no need to drive him into the ground that late after the throw.

Then we already have a rule for this. It's a personal foul; it's been called before as well.

quote:

UNNECESSARY ACTS AGAINST PASSER

(2) A rushing defender is prohibited from committing such intimidating and punishing acts as “stuffing” a passer into the ground or unnecessarily wrestling or driving him down after the passer has thrown the ball, even if the rusher makes his initial contact with the passer within the one-step limitation provided for in (1) above. When tackling a passer who is in a defenseless posture (e.g., during or just after throwing a pass), a defensive player must not unnecessarily or violently throw him down and land on top of him with all or most of the defender’s weight. Instead, the defensive player must strive to wrap up or cradle the passer with the defensive player’s arms

The defender watched the ball go right past his head, so no, that's not what happened.

Right, it's the driving them hard into the ground afterwards that's the issue.

Rodgers didn't even have the ball when Barr initiated that hit, and still drove him into the ground with his body.

Most players just give the QB a hard shove when the balls already been released before you get there to make a hit, that's how it should be.

Unnecessary roughness should cover any particularly dangerous play. The Barr hit was borderline, but certainly not one that I'm willing to change the rules over. At some point you're talking about fundamentally changing the sport.

I feel like people are forgetting at the end of the day that they are playing football. People are going to get hurt no matter how much you change the rules.

Haha

Let’s limit the number of passes that can be thrown by each team to limit exposure to hits like this. Its for safety! Each player may throw at most 20 passes.

Goodell has already turned the NFL into a joke of what it used to be. Might as well making touching the QB completely illegal. What the hell, why not.

Go back to the leather helmet and shoulder pads. Maybe they’ll learn to not hit each other as hard going for the Sportscenter highlight.
