I was recently speaking with a buddy who is using online banking, Ally. He said he made the change mostly because of the interest rate on his savings account. This conversation got me thinking about shopping around for a new bank or staying with Chase, who I have been with for some time now. I figured the best place for opinions on this matter is the MB. TIA

I use 3 banks-
Wells Fargo- have had an account there forever, and my wife had hers there too, so we linked our accounts and opened a joint checking and pay most of our bills from there. I've always been pretty satisfied with their service, although my wife and parents have had some complaints about WF service or policies.

Chase- I have a friend who is a banker there, so he opened an account for my wife and I and we got some of those cash bonuses, plus he upgraded us to their private client relationship which actually has a bunch of small, yet convenient perks. My favorite is the reimbursement for atm usage, meaning I can withdraw from any atm anywhere free of charge. We actually now do most of our banking through chase and have a free safe deposit box as well. The in branch service I've received has been excellent for the most part.

Bank of America- I only use this because it's linked to Merrill edge which I use for my investments. The closest b of a branch near me is awful so I rarely do any banking with b of a, I just have an account by default.

USAA. Phenomenal customer service, advanced web site and app, reimburse monthly ATM fees, remote deposit, auto, jewelry and home owners' insurance, savings, IRAs, and very competitive interest rates.

PenFed. Simply for their auto loan rates.

LA Capitol FCU. Obtained personal line of credit for 5.9 %. Couldn't find a better rate anywhere else.

Charles Schwab - By far the best checking account on the market. No fees and terrific customer service. Downfall is they may not have physical locations to visit in your area, but this has never been an issue for me.

SunTrust - still open from college but will eventually close it.

Credit Union - auto rate was the best I found anywhere.

Chase - it is the no fee checking account I have had since HS and has locations everywhere

Ally - online savings account and it had one of the highest interest rates for a money market account when it was GMAC

Regions. I'm not crazy about them but I couldn't convince my wife to switch to our local credit union when we got married.

We never borrow from them because their rates are just not competitive. I've gone with PenFed and our local CU for mortgage, auto loans, etc. (She doesn't care about these things thankfully)

Same here. USAA has fantastic customer service, same day availability of funds for deposits made from home, and the easiest loan approval process imaginable. Their interest rates are slightly higher than some other institutions, but I'll accept that cost for the convenience of dealing with USAA.

Regions- has branches everywhere I need to be able to access cash (Nola, Bham, Huntsville, Tuscaloosa). Plus there is a branch/their HQ less than 2 blocks from where I live.

Should just use USAA since they reimburse ATM fees anyway but I haven't come to terms with online only banking yet.

I wouldn't bank with a particular institution...but rather an individual I worked well with and took good care of me and my affairs. Doesn't matter if it's a big bank or local community bank. It's the person you work with that matters most. If you find someone, stick with them. Just like a CPA or an attorney.

Chase
I've stuck with them since high school.
1) They've always treated me well when I was a dumbass.

2) Their hours are great.

3) They were one of the first to innovate mobile usage,
and I've always found it easy to use

4) The re financed my car and bent the rules a bit to do
it.

5) Quick pay!

Home Bank - They have a local branch where I live so I can go in and talk to someone if need be. Was a long time (20 years) customer of the bank they bought out (Britton & Koontz).

PNC Bank - Use this account only for making deposits while on the road (expense checks) via their mobile deposit. No real reason they just happened to be in the town I was working in.

Chase- first checking account ever. I now use it primarily to pay bills. Very small balances.

Whitney/Hancock- HELOC new relationship that will eventually grow in size. Very attractive interest rates and quick turnaround times.

Iberia- opened some small loans prior to my HELOC thnking they were the most competitive rates. I still carry a small balance in a checking account. May close soon.

Chase - because I've fallen into the switching cost trap and don't feel like taking the time to move everything.

PenFed - Auto loan and Refi rates were lowest I could find and ridiculously easy to get done. I spent 15 minutes online for the auto loan and had a check on my front porch at 8 am the next morning without speaking to a human being. The refi was almost as easy with a closing at home.

I have an account with a local credit union that my father opened when I was an infant.

Same. The top of my pet peeve list is that you cannot find your branch's phone number online. They all re-direct to the toll free main line. That has been an enormous pain in the arse working 300 miles away from home. My wife has Chase and I don't know why I haven't switched.

I recently refinanced a new auto loan through them. They beat PenFed and several other online CUs. Historically they are bad, though.

Navy Federal Credit Union- Most of my banking is here
If you are USAA eligible look at NFCU. Service is just as good if not better with better rates.

USAA- really only have for insurance but with that I have a saving and checking with them to transfer money for insurance.

Wells Fargo Investments and fidelity Investments for Roth IRA and 401K respectively.
