I have been saving and will have enough to buy in full at the time of purchase, but I would rather take advantage of an introductory promotion and earn rewards.

And yes I realize there is a thread on credit cards already, but it's 136 pages long and I don't have the time to skim the entire thing.

I typically prefer cash back rewards but wouldnt be opposed to airline points.

Stay single. A single male with a job has a greater stock value than almost any female.

Look at the thread where we did all the work for you or Google best cash back credit cards. If you aren't willing to take a little time then neither am I.

Congrats on the engagement.

You will likely get a much better deal paying cash for this. I looked into this when I did it. Cash was king here.

Also you would likely have to pre-fund the card because of the smaller limit with a new company.

Unless you are ordering one online you'll get a better savings with cash

Buy used off of Idonowidont.com. There is no better cash back than actual market value diamonds.

If you do this, go with Chase Sapphire Preferred and order it through Ultimate Rewards on Blue Nile. You can get an extra 3pts/dollar in UR on Blue Nile.

This is easily my biggest screw up on buying a diamond. I could have gotten quite a few more points by doing that considering I ordered the card on Blue Nile with my Sapphire. I just didnt do it through UR.

Diamonds are pretty, but dumb. Make sure she understands what you're thinking of buying and actually wants it. Plenty of women (myself included) forgo engagement rocks and are happy with simple bands. Would she rather have a two-week trip to (insert destination) than an engagement ring? Or flight lessons, or a joint savings account with equivalent cash that represents the start on a house downpayment?

Life doesn't have to follow the hackneyed script followed by all the other sheep. Figure out what makes you both happy and do that.

That's awesome. I've never seen that before but just checked it out and the prices are pretty good for sure. I'm sure some ladies wouldn't be too crazy about a "used" diamond, but many of them are used anyway. She doesn't have to know.

Also, speaking of better value. A friend of mine is in the jewelry business and told me about this general flow of sales for a diamond. He tried to hook me up in the middle, but I was looking for a very particular stone to fit in a family setting and he couldn't help me out. Here it is though...

Jack buys a diamond for Jill @ $1,000
They break up
Jill wants the cash and sells it at one of those "cash for jewelry" type places. They only offer her "dump value" of only $500 for it. She takes it.
Cash4Jewelry sells it to a wholesaler for $650.
Wholesaler sells it to a jewelry store for $800.
Jewelry store sells it to Joe for his next wife for $1000.

Probably best not to ever say anything. At the worst, just take the diamond out of the ring and put it in a new setting. I'm not sure there is a racket worse than the diamond market.

I bought an engagement ring for $3250 off that site that cost $6500 off Blue Nile 4 years ago that probably would have cost $10000 at a local retail shop. The site is 100% legit. They check the diamonds before they send them to you to assure they are legitimate. You often can purchase diamonds that still have the GIA documentation. I can't recommend going that route enough.

Just have a local jeweler clean it (generally free) and resize it (like $50, if it's too big), and you will have an amazing and really expensive engagement ring for a much more realistic price.

And you can still get rewards for paying with a credit card. (To bring the thread back on topic.)

I'd add that it's probably worth taking it to an independent appraiser when you get it to verify the grades and the GIA laser inscription. If you end up getting it insured, you'll likely have to have an appraisal anyway.

Don't spend a ton. If you're like me you might end up buying another when she loses the first one.

If you are dead set on using a CC to buy the ring, I would look at offers that are for jewelry. The interest rate is probably going to be more important to you than any cash back or points.

Wells Fargo jewelry advantage is an example. I was offered the card for my wife's ring. It's nice to go in pick something out, put it on the card, and have 0% interest for 12 months on all new purchases.

I used my Chase Sapphire Preferred and paid it off immediately as you plan to do. Aucoin Heart didn't have a different deal for cash or credit card. Most places only do that if you're using AMEX. Given my CSP was a Visa, it was a non-issue price wise.

I pretty much turned every comment around to divorce for about a week. One of my better comedic efforts since we've been married. Man I was on a roll.
