I see they are already offering fee waivers or 10k points for folks on FT. I'd take the 10k in a heartbeat.

FT is Flyer Talk? Do you have to be a member there to get SPG to offer you 10k or a fee waiver? I was about to call and cancel today but got busy, but I would keep the card another year with 10k or a fee waiver no doubt. Tell me how to do this, obi wan

ETA: went to FT and read a couple pages of the thread. Seems like every other post says they were offered nothing or something small like $25. I'll try tomorrow on the # they listed and see what I get offered. Knowing my luck they'll raise the fee

I'd be surprised to see this again, but I actually wish I would've not done it now

Yeah, no kidding

Unfortunately for us, the consumer, we are left one with less option that had a reasonable award chart for their high end properties. Marriott high end has some ridiculous redemption prices.

Definitely. I don't get why Marriott and Hilton have shitty point values. I don't even entertain their points because they seem so worthless. I should look into Hyatt though. IHG can't get the over water bungalow, Starwood going to shite, and as I see you posted below AA became scumbags like UA and Delta with their awards.

You'll be fine. They accept reservations up to 1.5 years out. Just book before the merger closes next summer.

Good call. I'll either swap them over to AA miles if they have the bonus again (although AA is getting so devalued) or I'll book a year ahead of time. Of course, if the IHG points don't work in Bora Bora I could stay with their hotels in Munich as well.

First class between the US and South Pacific increases by 37,500 miles, from 72,500 miles to 110,000 miles (in the highly unlikely event you can find Qantas first class award space)

That's some dirtball stuff there, man. They raised Hawaii to mainland from the 17.5 off-peak to 20,000 which sucks but it's not that bad. It was a reason I got their card and have flown them so much though, is AA was 35k rt and everyone else was 40k minimum. Now they;re no different so I'm going to consider Hawaiian, Alaska, and possibly Delta now for my airline keeper card. I just got the Alaska card and I think I'm going to like this one. frick United as you know , but now I may be saying frick AA as well. The idea that they raised some of these levels that high is ridiculous and means all the thousands of points I've been earning, saving, etc are worth less and maybe soon worthless. Europe mileSaaver off-peak went up the same 2.5 but the regular Saver stayed the same.

The flight to Japan really took a hit too. You could fly coach rt for 50k straight though. Now it's 65k.
This shite pisses me off

In their email:

We're adjusting existing award levels for award tickets redeemed on March 22, 2016 and beyond due to changes to market pricing and demand.

Uh, fuel prices are at the lowest they've been in years you pieces of shite. Face it, it's greed plain and simple.

Just FYI, if anyone has signed up for the Chase Sapphire or Freedom cards in the last 90 days and completed your points promotion, they will upgrade you to the new points of 50K for the sapphire and 150.00 for the freedom. I have already called and done it today.

This got stuck on the bottom of the page, so I'll bring it back up. I was just given the extra 10k points for my Sapphire Preferred...It was easy, no begging or bitching necessary. You can even do it through the secure messaging portal.

Yep, it is faster through the portal. I did both the freedom and sapphire in a few hours. The phone rep told me it would take 7-10 days. You must have already completed the bonus or they will tell you to wait until you have. Free 150.00, no muss no fuss. It worked out nice for us because we transferred about 2200.00 in balances to the freedom and between my sapphire and freedom and my wife's sapphire and freedom we opened up at the same time, we have earned about 1600.00 dollars in bonus money in 2 months and we are going to use that to pay off almost all of the transfer balance. Worked out great as we have incurred no additional debt doing it.

Yeah. It seems like the most recent posts started getting offers for those with a decent spend.

I'll be aiming to book a New Zealand trip for first of 2017. Unfortunately didn't want to go that early in the year, but it is what it is.

It's basically like buy 3 get 1 free before the new chart kicks in for business class to South Pacific.

I've never had a credit card before, but now that I am out of college and in the real world, I want to sign up for one both to build credit and get rewards. Pretty much my only expenses that I would put on my card would be gas, groceries, and the once/twice a year trips I take to road LSU football games.

I want to sign up pretty soon to take advantage of my Christmas spending. I don't want an annual fee, and I will pay off at the end of every month. Basically just looking to get free rewards. I would probably rather points that I can use to go towards vacations in the future over getting cash back. Probably sounds stupid, but the thought of getting a free present for myself is just more exciting. Anybody have any suggestions for cards for me?

TIA

You want the Chase Freedom for the $150 signup bonus right now.
10% on Amazon purchases through end of year.
5% rotating categories gas/grocery/restaurant.

I agree with the Freedom. I did just get the Amex Everyday Preferred which would be good for the categories you want to spend in. They have a no fee version called the Amex Everyday.

Just called retention and he said "you've been with us for 7 years, we want to keep you" then proceeded to tell me no retention bonus showed up on his screen

He did ask why my spending had come down to which I said I had to meet minimum spends on all my other cards but that my normal everyday card is the SPG. I have until Dec 7th to call and cancel and get the $95 refunded so I'll try one more time next week and see if I get an offer. If not, I'm canceling it. Sucks as I really like that card and program but not sure there's value in $100 for it.

Ya'll are putting me on the fence too.

I'm thinking I just might hold it until my Thailand trip next month, get my account back up to 20,000 points on the nose so I can get that 5,000 bump if I transfer to an airline, then cancel.

My fee should be coming due next month.

A wildcard in my decision is the fact I should start traveling to TX for work and need to pick a chain.

You know all the questions for what to look for in the card obviously.id use that he'll out of the card until next summer but I'd also push to have the fee waived for the uncertainty of staying loyal.

Free breakfast and club access is irrelevant to me in hotels. I generally don't use that stuff for more than coffe, muffin and coffee.

It's about the suite upgrades and ability to earn/burn free nights for me. Id really appreciate the suite upgrades when traveling with my wife and kid.

I also really like that Hyatt doesn't blackout dates or jack up rates for aspirational properties way out of proportion.

Ya, I'm thinking I might go this route. Hyatt is basically Starwood without airline transfers with better paid stay point earning rates, or so it seems.

Looking at the Cat 4 hotels, there are some good options for the free night usage.

Is there a particular time of the year when credit cards tend to roll out big promotions? I want to get an travel card, but I'm not sure if I should hold off and wait for better promotions or just go ahead and get one now.

There really is. Well worth the $79 fee.
Last 12 months or so I've stayed at:
Hyatt Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco - Great location.
Hyatt Vineyard Creek Hotel and Spa in - Sonoma wine country.
Hyatt French Quarter New Orleans
Hyatt Regency New Orleans
Hyatt Place New Orleans
Hyatt Place Chicago/River North - Rooms usually are >$300/night in summer at both of the Chicago hotels.
Hyatt Regency Chicago
Hyatt Regency Hong Kong, Tsim Sha Tsui

Damn shame point stays don't count toward status. I have received a better room a couple of times as a Platinum. It definitely doesn't seem to be something they do voluntarily.

I did apply for the Hyatt Diamond through Twitter, but not expecting much.

They even have a couple spots in Park City for ski vacations(non-ski in/out) but still good value and a couple hotels in Vegas.

That two free nights sign on bonus with the Hyatt card is killer if you use it correctly. I burned mine at the Park Hyatt in New York where the rooms were running $850/night when I booked it. You can't beat what is essentially a $1,700 sign on bonus for just spending $1000 in 3 months.
