A past time of my mine when my wife is shopping, and she asks if we should get this or that within earshot of someone.

"Why not? we're rich"

Embarrasses the hell out of her.

It's pretty simple though.
$14 fee + $45 for stamp and it's all done on arrival. You just need a letter from your hotel showing your stay.

By the way...I hate British Airways. Fuel charges to Europe are silliness and they dominate the Oneworld market. Iberia, Air Berlin, Finn Air, Aer Lingus offer a fraction of the transatlantic service.

I dont understand fuel charges. Is this an extra charge on top of what you pay for the ticket? If so, why not just put it in the ticket price?

I know you don't like BA but I got first class to Venice for miles and a few hundred dollars. It's s lot less than the $8k one way ticket in first class.

Initially the "fuel surcharge" was added when fuel prices shot up years ago. They would advertise the flight price and the fuel surcharge was tacked on like a tax. Some airlines have actually begun to call it something like "flight surcharge" or something of the sort since fuel prices have fallen. Some programs have dumped their fuel surcharge and some just keep charging it since they can and people keep paying it. See BA.

Yeah I know and it's my fall back plan if I can't fit any other award flight in to my schedule.

3 tickets at $360 is a lot different than 3 tickets at $67, so ideally I'd like to keep that almost a grand in my pocket if I can.

There are two ways I'll ever fly on BA metal:
1) Austin to London on their 787 because it seems like the only way I'll get to fly on one any time soon.
2) NYC to London on their Open Skies plane - which is way cheaper for fuel surcharges than other BA planes, for some reason.

Any particular reason for that? Get you some United points. Star Alliance has a good bit in service.

I'm partial to the 747 and A380. Something about sitting upstairs is always pretty cool to me.

No reason in particular. I thought it was the only 787 in service near me, going somewhere I'd want to go. AA has one out of DFW but it goes to Beijing if I'm remembering correctly. I'd also love to fly 747 and 380 soon.

Working on the United points now with a new CSP coming today.

Should I apply for the Visa before or after I book my flight? I know you said done on arrival, but it appears that I still have to fill out an application.

United has a couple domestic 787 legs daily into and out of IAH. One to DEN and one to SFO I believe. Sometimes to EWR as well. You can also fly to Lagos, GRU, or LHR nonstop from IAH on one currently.

You shouldn't apply at all if you want to save a few bucks. You can get it all done ahead of time for around $100 it looks like, but you have to send off your passport to the Embassy.
Go here and apply for an approval letter.

Looks like the service fee is $19 now and the visa is $45. Once your approval letter is done, you're good to go until you get to Saigon. They'll issue you a VOA at the airport.

I wound up going with the SW Plus and Barclaycard Wyndham (30k points with first purchase and 15k after 1k spend in first 3 mos). $69 fee for each, but I think that combo will give me the best shot at availability when I'm ready to book. Wyndham points are a flat 15k per night, so I'll have to spring for another room there or elsewhere the last night.

Very nice. That Wyndham card is definitely more interesting than it was. I might consider that next year if their higher end Hawaii property is still in the Wyndham portfolio.

I have the itch. The only thing appealing to me is the business United card with a 50k bonus. I'm beginning to wonder if the really good bonuses are a thing of the past.

There hasn't been a 100k mile bonus since last July.

I actually swipe my United Biz card pretty often. It gets 2k at restaurants/gas. It's actually a decent card to keep in your wallet.

Yeah I went ahead and applied for the Citi AA 50k Plat Biz card, 50k Citi AA Plat personal card, BOA Alaska 25k personal and 25k biz card. Hoping those initially go in as one credit pull from both companies until the business pull drops off. Like a BOGO for credit card apps. All approved instantly except the BOA Biz card. I just had to review my business with them.

Those Alaska miles present some really nice deals for travel to Asia and S America considering they are churnable cards, you make $25 on the current app, and it only requires $1k spend.

Cathay Pacific is 50k biz/75k first US to Asia

Emirates is 75k/100k US to asia but seems to have amazing availability from several US cities at almost any date when booking a year out.
