If you can easily float the cash for it, prepaying your monthly expenses by buying gift cards is just an easy thing to do.
I know my fuel rewards program rewards me 2x points too at the grocery store. So buying 100$ in gift cards gets me $0.20 cents/gallon + 100 SW points so I would get ~3.4% on fuel rewards + SW points
Normally I use my AmexBlue to buy $100 Amazon cards which is ~10% back as long as I am under grocery limit/year
ETA: If you have a flex spending account (FSA), don't forget you can buy with CC then submit receipt to FSA for reimbursement

I've been doing this too at my local Kroger, and they recently started asking me for my driver's license number. Think they're trying to crack down on us?

Nope, Kroger has been hit with some fraud lately and so buying GCs with a CC in large amounts raises flags for fraud. SO's card was stolen and first thing they did was buy GCs as those are esay high $ items they can buy quickly. To combat this, Kroger is just trying to do a better job of verifying identity according to the employee I talked to
They don't care about how you buy merchant gift cards as they make margins and doesn't cost them anything to carry them.

Here is a way to make a quick 300 SW points by dining at a SW Dine RW location and filling out a survey + normal 3x points for SW Dine. Cost is $25
LINK
ETA: If you can achieve 1500 points using SW dine + reviews (10pts/review) , they will give you another 500 points as well

Ya, it's too easy still to get rid of it. I also have been putting spend on it to offset one honeymoon hotel. I'm on the fence about canceling if Serve stops and hotel is covered. Its this and SPG which get our 1x spend
I will be cancelling my wife's Arrival Plus this month. I'll look for a retention offer of waiving annual fee. FT doesn't seem to have recent data points.

Especially when they let you apply for 4 Alaska cards in a day.
I really find it hard to believe this is a profitable approach for the Alaska mileage program. What do I know. I think Chase probably has it about right with the 2 year churn. I'd guess that >99% of the population isn't playing this little game. We are an outlier that probably isn't heavily considered for most program T&C's.
I haven't tried multiples yet, but I got the personal/biz same day. In 90 days, I'm going to try for 2 personal and 1 more biz. I'm really disappointed in myself for not including this card in my App O ramas from the beginning. I just never really looked much in to their program, and my initial drawback was that Alaska doesn't offer much out of MSY.
But, the ease of the signup bonus combined with some of the great deals on awards, it's worth paying for a positioning flight with SW or whomever.

I just got the Fidelity Amex card for 2% cash back into my Roth IRA, plus a $50 signup bonus. I feel like it's a good everyday card.

Yea, I was surprised I got approved for both personals for SW on the same day after reading most people get denied and instead do the business card. I now have 5 credit cards...four are personals from Chase.

If I were you I'd be getting a Chase Sapphire Preferred so I could transfer those UR points out to partners. Rumor on the street is that Chase is cracking down on approvals for the Chase branded cards.

Which ones in particular and by cracking down is that for churners or everyone? I alrady thought they had some high restrictions compared to others.

Also, Southwest 50k promotion looks like it is over. They are showing 25k online :sadnana:

Chase branded cards only. Freedom, CSP, Slate, et al. It appears that if you've been doing some churning in the past two years Chase isn't going to approve you for the Chase branded cards.
Co branded cards like United, Southwest, Marriott and the rest still appear to be fair game.

Looks like the 50k signup is now just for the premier branded cards for Southwest

I thought I read they were tough and rarely waived as is. I figure I've put a hefty amount on it the past two years, maybe I should threaten out.
I downgraded my wife but I should probably go through with a full cancel. It isn't like I'm putting small amounts on there to throw them off that is was for the bonus only.

Totally agree. Only curveball is if they approve you for $2,000 instead of $5,000, you don't get the signup bonus you applied for. Real shady and takes work getting it worked out and reconned. I need to get my wife one here in a bit. I have one. We actually might use it as intended and go to Seattle
I got quite a bit to burn before I go all in on the Emirates strategy. I need to really look at their destinations and really investigate it if it works for our goals.

I believe the cash back cards are definitely king for the majority of folks who don't want all the trouble and this one is a particular smart play since you're funding retirement with it.
Posted on 7/1/15 at 1:19 pm to Teddy Ruxpin
I do want all the trouble, I am just out of cards to play right now
Also does your wife think you're weird?
I couldn't imagine explaining this to my s/o

She doesn't let me go as hard on her applications as I do mine, but that has relented a bit.
The domestic trips for change didn't really convince her. I think once I booked a trip to Spain and then a Business/First trip to Thailand, it tends to put them in an agreeable mindset
Thing now is when to have kids. As money isn't really a problem now.

That's where I'm headed. I haven't settled on where I'll end up, but flying the A380 from DFW/IAH/ORD will be priority. The free stop over is a nice perk on one-way tickets, but the inability to mix and match partners sucks.

Then it becomes when do you start bringing the heathens on the trips, and when should you start booking upper class tickets with them.
Or, can I start getting them credit card bonuses too?
