Archer really started the downturn and it began with his lazy recruiting.

To this day, I hate Brett Favre for making Curley Hallman look like a coach.
I'm curious how we CAN have so many knowledgeable sports fans but no one in the Administration can evaluate a coach until he arrives at LSU.
Hallman had one good year.
Dinardo got beat by fifty points in his last game prior to being hired at LSU.
What are those guys doing now, selling insurance?

or if Bill Arnsparger would have stayed until 1990- those Arnsparger teams had some VERY sick defenses
Good point; however, along with Joe Dean, I blame Bill Arnsparger for some of LSU's issues through the 90's. As others have stated, our problems all began with Mike Archer (Joe Dean's first hire).
After Arnsparger decided to retire from coaching and become the AD at Florida, Steve Spurrier applied for and seriously wanted the LSU job. Mike Shanahan and Mack Brown also interviewed for the LSU job.
Instead of helping LSU and suggesting one of those proven coaches, Arnsparger "hand picks" Mike Archer (with no head coaching experience)to succeed him at LSU as the youngest head coach in college football. And like a dumbass, Joe Dean listens to him.
The worst part is that as Florida's AD, Arnsparger goes on to hire Spurrier at Florida a couple years later while LSU wallowed in mediocrity throughout the 90's under the direction of Joe Dean.

quote:No, Archer had 2 winning seasons, including one of the all-time best years at LSU prior to the current Saban/Miles run.
And Archer was even worse
However, he IS proof that Miles isn't just a fluke. Like Miles, Mike Archer stepped into a great situation, almost as good as what Miles did, and just had to keep things rolling. He failed miserably at that, while Miles has succeeded.

Halllman had a good year? When?

You have a faulty memory. Archer wasn't good, but I don't remember Archer getting beat by a&m 24-0, losing to Ole Miss 32-0 or having Arkansas beat him 30-6.

LSU was average at best starting from the 60's. Guess i just assumed lsu was good until the 90's
"Average at best" is selling those teams short. While of course we weren't as good as we have been in the 2000s and 2010s, LSU was good in the '60s, started tailing off toward the mid-'70s, were mostly good but inconsistent in the '80s, then fell into the abyss in the '90s.
In the 1960s, LSU:
--went to five "big four" bowls (2 Cotton, 2 Sugar, 1 Orange)
--won one SEC title (1961)
--finished ranked in the final polls six times (AP ranked only 10 teams from 1962-67 and both ranked only 20 teams otherwise)
--had ten winning seasons and no losing seasons
--had an overall record of 76-26-5 (.734)
--ranked 6th nationally for the decade 1961-70 (per College Football Data Warehouse, which counts decades from 1-10 instead of 0-9, although this post reflects 0-9 for all other criteria)
In the 1970s, we:
--went to two "big four" bowls (2 Orange)
--won one SEC title (1970)
--finished ranked in the final polls four times (both ranked only 20 teams)
--had eight winning seasons, one losing season (1975), one .500 season (1974)
--had an overall record of 76-38-3 (.662)
--ranked 14th nationally for the decade 1971-80
In the 1980s, we:
--went to three "big four" bowls (2 Sugar, 1 Orange)
--won two SEC titles (1986, 1988) and would have won another (1984) that was vacated instead of being awarded to us as the highest finishing eligible team
--finished ranked in the final polls six times (AP ranked 25 teams in 1989, otherwise both ranked only 20 teams)
--had seven winning seasons and three losing seasons (1981, 1983, 1989)
--had an overall record of 70-41-5 (.625)
--ranked 24th nationally for the decade 1981-90
Forget the 1990s, although those of us who lived through it never will.
In the 2000s, we:
--went to four BCS bowls (2 Sugar, 2 BCSNC/Sugar)
--won three SEC titles (2001, 2003, 2007)
--won two national titles (2003, 2007)
--finished ranked in the final polls eight times
--had ten winning seasons and no losing seasons
--had an overall record of 99-31 (.762)
--ranked 3rd nationally for the decade 2001-10
Through 6 years of the 2010s, we've:
--been to one BCS/CFP bowl (BCSNC/Sugar)
--won one SEC title (2011)
--finished ranked in the final polls five times
--had six winning seasons and no losing seasons
--had an overall record of 61-17 (.782)
--ranked 8th nationally for the period 2011-15
In the three decades preceding the 1990s, we finished in the final polls more than half the time and were overall ranked nationally in the top 10, top 15 and top 25 respectively. That is nowhere near "average at best", it's above average at worst.

Archer was most definitely worse than Hallman, regardless of their records. Archer took over a top-10 program coming off an SEC championship, then ran it into the ground as recruiting fell off a cliff. Hallman took over the program in the toilet that Archer left it in, greatly improved recruiting, but unfortunately could not do anything with the talent he stocked. Still, the program was much better off (i.e. more talent on the roster) when Hallman left it than when he inherited it. The opposite is true of Archer.
And as for shitty losses, how about 44-3 to Miami, 24-21 to Vanderbilt (Vandy's only win that year), 34-8 to Florida and 42-3 to Florida State?

Speak for yourself. It's WAY more fun now than it was then. And you're right that it's not even close. Not even remotely.

quote:My cousin/godfather was the QB back then. He says the same thing. They were so excited at the thought of a bowl game. He actually did set the LSU completions record that day from what I remember.
I distinctly remember Kevin being so excited that if they beat Arkansas in the last game of the 1993 they'd be bowl eligible, and being so upset after they lost.

Depends what you call a good year. He had one 10-2 season and one 8-4 season at USM, sandwiched around a 5-6 season. The 8-4 season featured wins over Alabama and Auburn and four losses by a combined margin of 12 points to Georgia (18-17), Miss. St. (13-10), Virginia Tech (20-16) and N.C. State (31-27).

He also had a rule that the players were not allowed to celebrate after touchdowns. We made sure of that by rarely scoring touchdowns, and the rare times when we did, the scoring player was usually in such a state of shock that it didn't occur to him to celebrate.

How was he (Hallman) not fired after the 3rd season?
He had inherited an empty cupboard and struggled, but had recruited well and it looked like we were ready to contend for the SEC West in 1994. But seven turnovers including four for defensive TDs on that September afternoon at Auburn shattered everything. After that, the team found unbelievable ways to shoot itself in the foot all season despite being very good from a talent standpoint. We actually led the SEC in total defense that year.

The stories I have on Hallman are unreal. The dude was a complete and utter a-hole to his players. The pride of LSU is the only thing that kept them from all quitting and not showing up to games

Dear Diary....
Today, I woke up and brushed my teeth. I changed my underoos because today is Friday. I really like weather, it's kind of neato! I when I say neato, I mean it is unpredictable. I caught a trouser trout in my khaki pants with pockets one time. I was sure surprised. Spam sandwiches are good and smell like grandpa's breath!
