Saw the thread since 2000 how LSU was second only to bama in status in the SEC . That sent me over to scan previous seasons on how LSU looked before that. Went all the way back to the 60's. LSU was average at best starting from the 60's. Guess i just assumed lsu was good until the 90's,purple and gold glasses. I was wrong. One good season followed by average then 1 bad season. Then i hit the Hallman Era. Dang this guy was Horrible. I guess i never witnessed it because in the early 90's i was a young 19 year old kid stationed in Anchorage alaska in the Air Force and saw like one LSU game every 6 weeks. Have to say thank goodness for that. How was he not fired after the 3rd season? It just hit me that this is "Indeed" the longest run of Success that LSU has had in the modern football era. This year should only add to it. I guess i really do appreciate a little more now what Miles has maintained along with what saban started .

To this day, I hate Brett Favre for making Curley Hallman look like a coach.

Well, Dinardo is the one who turned things around, Saban brought it to another level, and Miles has done an incredible job holding it there in a time when SEC West has been tougher than ever....

I was at LSU from 1990 - 1995. I sat there and watched Florida beat us 58-3 and the home loss to Southern Miss. I had a couple of Kinesiology classes with Jamie Howard and Kevin Mawae; I swear I remember Jamie saying he was told which receiver to throw to before the play started (rather than read the defense) but that may be something I've heard since then and could readily belive. I distinctly remember Kevin being so excited that if they beat Arkansas in the last game of the 1993 they'd be bowl eligible, and being so upset after they lost. He did love Hal Hunter though...

We pretty much had Joe dean to thank for that and many other debacles w/in and OUTSIDE the LSU athletic dept. Joe preferred to go CHEAP on virtually everything, and a man of little to no vision. He was formerly a big wheel w/ Converse and that firms' demise somewhat coincided with LSU's, during that time.

Beat a Bama team on an epic run and bought himself one more painful year.

THIS

It's HIGHLY likely Saban and Miles era does not happen if DiNardo did not right the ship (albeit to his later demise with Tepper). LSU absolutely caught/piqued Saban's attention after DiNardo beat him in '95 Indy Bowl.

Considering LSU was not ranked in the final polls in 10 of those 20 seasons through the 60's and 70's. And the years they were ranked, their average ranking was 10. Then I would say "average" compared to LSU football standards.

Nope

In my lifetime, the only coach that comes close to Hallman as infamously bad is Tepper.

My Tenure as an LSU fan goes back to the early 60's...

THIS was the beginning of the downfall.

And I really thought he would carry on Arnsparger's success.

Yes, Dinardo brought back the magic!

I started LSU in 1992 and although we were bad, LSU football games were EPIC. We partied like it was our job and visiting fans were amazed at how little the game outcome effected our mood and the mood at the bars afterwards. I'm pretty sure I snuck in more bourbon during that one season than kids do over 4 years now.

I wish LSU fans could remember how much fun football used to be.

'Researching the 1960 to 2000 years showed LSU to lack consistency.
'Nick Saban revived the LSU program from mediocrity to a respected national program.'
'Les Miles has maintained the program at a highly competitive level.'

I have a comprehension deficiency and those were the only relevant points I had the ability to decipher from your initial post. Did I miss any intended points?

LSU was actually pretty good in the 1960's and early 1970's. The 1961 and 1962 teams were every bit as good as any team in the country. From 69-73 they were very much in the mix and had some of the best defenses in the country and then around 1974 it all started to degrade

I've always wondered though, what could have been if Bo Rein had not died in 1980 or if Bill Arnsparger would have stayed until 1990- those Arnsparger teams had some VERY sick defenses
