Cantrell...Yes

But he was lovable... and he took his "thugness" to the playing field with him. It was high drama to see what he was going to do next.

I'm am not trying to condone hill's actions, but I am very confused about the way the older generation reacts. They are the first ones to want Hill kicked off the team for being a thug, but they love to tell the glory day stories of how Andolsek and Cantrell used to beat the hell out of people in the bars. So we're they thugs too?

I am the older generation you are referring to. Illegal behavior that leads to an arrest (see Cantrell, Collins, Foster, et. al.) when you are an LSU football player has never been acceptable in my mind. Were you looking for a different answer?

I will admit that I generalized and I apologize for that. I wasn't trying to put down anyone in my post and I am sorry to anyone that took it that way. I meant for post to be thought provoking. I just feel like when we hear of college athlete fight stories in the past, not many people have a negative connotation towards it. It is looked at as " well if you looked at that guy the wrong way, you were in trouble". But in today's age you are looked at as a criminal who doesn't care about his team. It is an interesting change in society over time

IMO if it's a valuable player like hill, there should be minimal punishment enforced.

Eric was a great guy but wouldn't back down when confronted......he almost NEVER looked for trouble. Art was an antagonist.....two very different people.

Eric was incredibly dangerous in close quarters and would destroy Greg in a dorm fight......

Yeah, I've never heard any Andolsek stories before.

I saw him praying to the Porcelain God one time in The Bengal while Nacho Albergamo and some other teammates were laughing at him. He was just a big ol' country boy.

I agree with this.

Andolsek was always my favorite player growing up because I used to love the way my dad talked about him.

Football is a violent sport. And it is played by people that can give it and take it. But some can't control that violence out in society...look, Blammer had 2-3 thugs arrested with guns a while back. Life is what it is...not what we want it to be.

Was just going to post about this....I heard this awhile back (don't remember where, it may have been here) but to balance things out a bit.....my impression was that Cantrelle has mellowed quite a bit in his old age. He is (I think) head of security for one of the Biloxi casinos, and has been doing that for a long time. A couple of LSU fellas (younger kids as I recall) worked up the nerve to say hello to him, and said he was just the nicest, friendliest guy to chat with; he seemed to genuinely enjoy talking & reminiscing about the old LSU days.

Working at one of the large casinos in Biloxi per a Dandy Don column a few years ago.

But he was lovable...

Brandishing a pistol to seek revenge on a teammate that knocked him clean out, doesn't sound lovable or particularly tough.

Ahhh, I'd forgotten that one! lol

Maybe it had to do with who you were....if you were a Louisiana homeboy he'd just beat your arse and be done with it. But something that far away from home? well..

I was a bouncer at Baby Does, Freds and Murphy's. We did not have any problems with football players as much as we did drunk frat guys..The players had curfew then. On one incident we had a little scrap at Murphys and the coach brought them in the next day to apologize. Elko was a monster though. We hired him because we could not handle him if he did blow up..lol,,,Fun times!!!!
