As a young child growing up in Chicago, I dimly remember seeing Davis play with the Bears. However, I had never watched any of his college games until today. I just finished viewing some of his performances during the 1986 and 1987 season. He was absolutely superb. Tremendous hands, precise route running, and above average speed (at least for that era). He was a very fluid, graceful athlete.

For those of you who saw him play in Tiger Stadium and can compare him to both more distant and more recent LSU greats like Bowe and Reed, where does Davis rank on the list of top LSU WR's?

They should have pressed charges against the groundskeeping crew at Veteran's Stadium for prematurely ending his career. What a travesty.

I don't know. This is something that never really made a whole lot of sense to me, because I expected Davis to do much better in the pros, but maybe that was just from being a kid when I watched him play.

I still say that over the length of his career, Davis was the best WR in all of LSU history compared to the performance of other SEC receivers during his era. Josh Reed takes the prize for having the best single season.

That's just the way I see it.

Blowing out both of your knees on one play tends to derail a career. He was the Bears leading receiver for 3 years before the injury. That was the biggest indictment of the crappy turf in Philly ever.

I'd agree. He was the best for an entire career at LSU in my lifetime.

Yeah, but he was only about top-25 or top-30 in receiving categories for the NFL during his 3rd through 5th years. Maybe it was just the particular offense the Bears were running back then. I don't know, I guess I was too young.

I was just surprised that he wasn't regularly a Pro Bowl type of player.

One thing ... I just noticed that he was only 5'11". I guess I didn't notice that type of thing back in the 80's, but it's hard to be an acrobatic type of WR superstar (and Davis was the graceful, acrobatic type) in the NFL without being taller.

I agree with your assessment of Wendelll Davis.

He was having a good career with the Bears until he had his knees destroyed on the Philadelphia turf.

A great college career is not contingent on a great pro career. He's the best ever at LSU.

He would be my number one. I remember a catch he made vs ND that still sticks in my mind as one of the best, and most clutch I have seen from an LSU player.

I would rate him number one, with the caveat that Josh Reed had the best season, and best single game performance.

Davis was just so smooth, ran GREAT routes and was as quick as it gets, without burner speed. He caught everything near him and did it in clutch time. The chemistry he had with Hodson was remarkable.

It's good to see him remembered fondly.

Another BEAST was Carlos Carson a decade earlier.

Great college career. Took a while to develope in pros. Was just starting to show his pro potential when Philly turf got him. One the worst injuries ever with no contact.
