I'll always remember the Ole Miss game, we were down, everyone in the stadium knew the ball was going to him, all the way down the field and they just couldn't stop him. Greatness!!!!

ABSOLUTELY one of the very best- probably the best ever, IMHO. I remember him well- seeing was believing. His performance against Ole Miss in '86 on LSU's last drive (which sadly ended in a missed chipshot FG and a 21-19 LSU loss) was among the best ever by an LSU reciever in any game.....Then there was his great farewell performance as a Tiger in the '87 Gator Bowl VS South Carolina and their heralded "Black Death" defense. He completely shreaded their secondary in a 30-13 "underdog" LSU win that wasn't even that close ....

Wendell Davis #82 was easily #1 as far as LSU history.

I go back to '70. IMO, Wendell Davis, Bowe, and Reed are #'s 1-3 in no particular order.

The chemistry he had with Hodson was remarkable.
Those two looked like they read each others minds. Have yet to see a college QB-WR combo as good. When Davis left Hodson wasn't the same. If Hodson could have had one more year with him he might have lived up to the "Hodson for Heisman" hype.

I think hawthorne use to say on the radio he was so fast he could turn out the lights and be in bed before they were out. Wendell was one of my first favorite athletes.

The best receiver in my opinion.

there were great overall receivers at LSU. They are:
Wendell Davis
Eric Martin
Carlos Carson
Andy Hamilton
Josh Reed (for good measure eventhough he lived off of the bubble screen as a running back/receiver, but not a good blocker)
Early Doucet developed into a very good receiver that would make some tough catches and still knock your head off blocking.
Eddie Kennison
Todd and Brian Kinchen - BOTH were very good receivers.
DBowe post eye correction. Before, he was way too inconsistent and really still is to be considered "great", but I love the way he blocks.

I can only tell you that he was the best I ever saw, at that time, and for many years after.
But, since 2000 we've had a whole lot of talent come through the goalposts. Probably bigger, faster & better, so I don't want to slight them. But, Wendell will probably always be my favorite receiver. To Windell

Yeah, that's the way I feel about it too. Wendell Davis had more artistry, skill, and clutch catching ability than the rest. I think if he were born a decade earlier like Steve Largent, he would have had a very similar pro career. Both had similar size (about 5'11" and 185-90 lbs.) and style.
Players like Buster Davis, Dwayne Bowe, and Early Doucet represent a new breed--all three of them (and, by the way, I always liked Buster Davis the best out of the 3 when they were together at LSU) are pretty close to 6'1" and 215 lbs., and could jump higher.

quote:Doc, do you remember Amp Hill? He was considered the leading receiver in that class when he had a knee injury that ended his career at LSU. I know he transferred, and wasn't successful, but, I want to give him a nod.

Remember hearing the name a lot, but don't actually remember seeing him very much. Tough break.
I found a thread from another message board from August 2005 about him quitting the team:

#1 in my book. He was the best route runner, had the best hands and made it look easy. Josh Reed, would probably rank one instead of two had he stayed for his final season. Third for me is Andy Hamilton, who was second only to Davis in route running and hands. He also hand a penchant for performing his best in the biggest games.(See Notre Dame 1971). Eric Martin comes in at four. Bowe, Doucet, Davis, Clayton, Lafell, Toliver and Henderson all had more physical talent than the top four guys but none supplied the total package as well as they did in their day. Eddie Kennison, who was the fastest man to ever play wide receiver at LSU, along with Tony Moss, Shed Wilson and Tommy Morrell round out the top fifteen in my book. No offense to guys like Jerel Myers, Todd Kinchen, Rogee McGee, Carlos Carson or Schyler Green. All were great Tigers.
ETA-lots of mispelled names.
