"those guys" must be staying there instead of coming to Tulane these days. Tulane has been falling back on the diamond and this New York school is doing well now............hmmmm.
You may be on to something here....

Sounds like the team at "Big State" in He Got Game.

North East is most densely populated region of the country. That plus a lack of quality programs up there may have opened the door up for a coach like the guy they have to go out and get the best. Where else is a kid from the up there going to go that really stands out? I wouldn’t be surprised if this program stays relevant for a while to come.

Buffalo ? You kid right ?
Binghamton is by far the best SUNY school in the state.
And this is coming from someone who visited all these schools before deciding on LSU and also knew several kids who went to Binghamton, SB, Albany and Buffalo
As a Stony Brook alum it's hard to say this, but if I were to say theres one SUNY flagship it's Buffalo. Buffalo has the largest enrollment and with Stony Brook receives the lions share of funding. Binghamton is more selective in undergraduate admissions because of its smaller enrollment, but it pales in comparison to Buffalo and Stony Brook as a research university (publications, citations, distinguished faculty, etc.)

Nyu.
Does not have a varsity team.
St. John's is in Queens, which is also on Long Island.
My guess would be that Columbia is the only team that plays D1 baseball on a field in Manhattan. I don't know where or if Fordham plays, and I'm guessing that Pace doesn't have a team.
EDIT: The Fordham Rams play in da Bronx at Coffey Field.
Ironically, the Manhattan College Jaspers also play in da Bronx at Van Cortlandt Park.
The NYU Violets club team plays at Canarsie Park in Brooklyn.
The Columbia Lions play at the Baker Athletics Complex on their Manhattan campus.

It's really about player development. Two of Stony Brook's draft picks, Jankowski and Campbell, came to Stony Brook with a ton of talent but were very raw. Jankowski had several football scholarships coming out of high school but decided on baseball and Stony Brook was the only school to offer him a baseball scholarship. Campbell tried out for the baseball team as a junior in high school. That summer at showcases he was throwing 89-90 and Stony Brook took a chance on him.

Any one who ever heard of stony brook on this board before this SR take 1 step forward.
Sorry if I feel that something is weird about how good their baseball team is.

Carmona is a beast of a player.

I had, but I lived in CT from 10 years old on, and have a brother that played baseball there. I'd imagine I am in the minority on this board.

I've actually been to college baseball games on Long Island many moons ago...

Most of their players are from new York. Guess the players wanted to stay closer to home. Why would a player from around here sign with a school 2000 miles away if get offered in state?
This is part of it as well. Our freshman DH turned down Clemson to come to Stony Brook as unlikely as that may seem.

How long before another school scoops up the Stony Brook coach?

It is an interesting questing. A sleeping giant may have emerged.
SB is a big school but a small athletic budget/department.
FWIW, we should look to replacing Towson with SB this year.

It's called 11.3 scholarships. You ever wonder how Cal St. Fullerton, Whichita State, Rice, Coastal Carolina, UC Cal Irvine, Tulane, ULL, and the list goes on can compete in baseball, but not any other major college sport?

Im not sure what other sports they play ,but i heard they have a $850,000 athletic budget..They are sure getting a bang for their buck

Stanford, Rice, Vanderbilt, & UNC have been known to land some very high quality pitchers on occasion by dangling that prestigious academic degree in front of them.

That's probably the baseball team's budget. Stony Brook's athletic department has a pretty respectable mid major budget at 18-20 millions dollars.
