what people say all around the country when talking about LSU
I've lived in a lot of places, and there is a level of respect about LSU. I have rarely come across anybody that hates LSU outside of the SEC.

I lived in the Midwest for quite a while. The folks there think we all have alligators in our swampy front yards. They know New Orleans has good food but is too dangerous to visit. They have no other conception about the state, including sports, because they never hear anything else from the media.
Oh, and they think everyone talks with a Texas or Mississippi accent because that's what they hear in the movies.

I've lived in Atlanta for over 20 years. Academically, people know that LSU is a state flagship school. It has the same respect as any other flagship school short of the ones considered elite. Nobody has ever given me the impression that they looked down on my degree.
That being said, almost all conversation/recognition is about LSU sports.

They fear our athletic prowess....

The consensus that I've gotten is that LSU is awesome at a lot of sports, and turns out engineers like nobody's business. I guess we could have a worse reputation.

This is very common outside of La....except in the oilfield. Many people from states not bordering La. think the education at LSU is a joke, right or wrong that's what they say.

I live in VA.
In football and baseball the school is highly respected as a national powerhouse. I have a lot of conversations with ACC and Big 10 fans who acknowledge LSU's greatness in these areas. I travel for business from SC to MD all the time. I will occasionally have my LSU shirt or hat on and get into a conversation about whatever sport is in season. On a side note a lot of people don't understand why LSU got rid of Miles. Most teams are happy with 8 to 10 wins and they say your not beating Alabama no matter the coach.
In basketball many believe the glory days have ended. Some fans even think Wade's decision to go to LSU was a step down. I don't necessarily agree with that as I think LSU long term can be something VCU could never be. But currently they are right until LSU strings together some tournament appearances. Just ask yourself our national view. Last year a player from LSU went #1 in the NBA draft and LSU did not make the tournament. Most people only see that as the story. They don't know how bad the coach was or that Simmons was just going through the mandatory waiting period to get to the NBA.

Big football power.
Big party school.
Third rate school academically.

They think we love the football, they think we good at the football, they know Alabama beats us at the football.

Living in New England, I honestly get a lot of blank stares when LSU is mentioned (specifically in sports). It's all about the professional sports (Red Sox, Pats, Celtics, Bruins), so their knowledge or give-a-shitness about college sports is limited.
When I do encounter people that know about college sports, I almost always get something along the lines of "Going to an LSU/Alabama game in Tiger Stadium is high on my bucket list." Actually had a guy at a work event say just that yesterday.

In my experience, mostly with people in the Midwest and West Coast, they obviously support their own area schools and conferences first and the SEC is kinda the bad guy with all the success in the conference.
LSU though most of them like more than a lot of the other schools and most would love to go to a game in Death Valley.
They also love our pro players...Shaq, Pistol Pete, Fournette, Honey Badger, PP21, OBJ, Bregs, Mikie, Jacoby, etc are names I often hear brought up.
With football, they think our coaches are awesome (Les) and crazy (O) but very likeable.

I know a good bit of people from Jersey and Chicago and both areas just thought of it as a really good football school. They knew nothing about the academics but assumed they would be mediocre.

Meh. He is in my experience. Maybe I don't hang around too many "East Coast elitists".

I wouldn't say I do either, but living in Harvard and MIT's back yard, it's definitely something that exists.
I've never had someone flat out insult LSU's academics to my face, I just tend to get more of the slightly condescending responses like:

Well, I mean, it's Harvard and MIT. They're pretty much going to be condescending to everyone, and let's not act like LSU's academic reputation is really on par with theirs.
