I have lived outside the state for more than half my life now. People read where Louisiana lays in terms of obesity, education, health, infrastructure, poverty, crime, etc. THAT is what they think of Louisiana. As for LSU they think it's a great sports school.
People back home, for the most part, are happy and to me that is what matters in the end! I can't wait for the day to get back there and retire.

Most of the above perception is accurate.

I'm from the midwest. A lot of people here see the South as this desolate place that they cannot imagine living in. We just showed a client the trailer to "Last Chance U". His response was, God I love the South.

When it comes to LSU, the only people sportswise who dislike us around here is Oklahoma. Seems like every OU fan I have ever met talks about how poorly they were treated at the 2003 Sugar Bowl and how they will never go back to New Orleans.

Most of my friends from up here follow LSU football since I am a fan, they keep up a little with other sports.
I recently met some guys, a judge and a few lawyers with no ties to LSU that road trip to one football home game a year and love it.
I have to beg a bar to put LSU game on especially when Penn State or Rutgers is playing

I'm a cat adjuster. I work all over the country. Almost everyone likes LSU and almost everyone dislikes Saban and Bama. I'm not kidding. 90% hope we beat Bama. LSU is well respected across this country.

Sorry folks but just calling it the way it is...outside the South if you have a Southern accent you are automatically perceived with 50 points less of an IQ

Shaq and football, that's what most people think about when it comes to LSU

Honestly most people outside of Louisiana who aren't total basketball nuts don't even know Shaq went to LSU, people are always surprised when I drop that one on them

LSU is known for its football and baseball anywhere outside of Louisiana I've ever been, and that's honestly not a bad thing in my book

Other than that they think Louisiana is a third world state......they are correct.
And that is what most think, especially about New Orleans. They love the food, but think the city is third world bad, and rebuilt on federal money.

People on the west coast weren't sure where baton rouge was located. I told them an hour from New Orleans. They then wanted to know if we were still flooded from Katrina.

The problem is how do you go about fixing this perception that the majority of Louisiana's citizens are Backwater Cajun pieces of white trash that have 3 teeth and just married their cousin....

LA is a pretty diverse state, more diverse than the racist northerners that look down on everyone.

^This^

And being the only LSU fan in an Oklahoma family that's 90% OU fans, 10% OkSt fans, I can confirm this. Okie State fans hate LSU because Miles left them to come here. That seems to have subsided somewhat.

But OU fans are relentlessly hateful towards LSU. Every family get together, and every day at my job, I get to hear about how LSU pays players to get them on campus, or how LSU buys vehicles for the football team.

I have repetitiously explained that they're actually thinking of Alabama... to no avail.

I know one thing, I've lived in Texas since 2003 and an LSU degree gets respect. Not only is it proof for career day on campus I've seen it first hand in corporate America personally and with all my friends that are LSU Alumni in Texas!!!!!
