Yes and no. My relatives and friends back east also view LSU as a cool place with a ton of Louisiana flavor which they find interesting.

I can't argue about the academic view of LSU. At best it's simply another University. At worst it's a joke.

The "face" and most prominent spokesperson for the entire university is now Ed Orgeron.
To the extent a person outside the state can identify a leader or face, the overwhelming majority will name Da Coach O.
Let that sink in....

When I come into contact with people around the country and they find out I'm from LSU, they usually want to ask about football and the SEC. They don't get too deep into it though. Not like we talk about football here.

Academically, when I tell people I went to LSU, they are neither impressed nor unimpressed. About the same reaction I give/see when someone else talks about where they went to school. There's really only a handful of schools out there that will get an "oooh" out of someone if you say you went there. Outside of the Ivy League and Oxford (England) no one gives a crap.

One should not care what others think about you, just go through life doing whats best for you and to hell with other people.

People in suburban Houston view LSU as a back-up school because of its academic reputation. It's frustrating to hear that, but in all honesty, LSU's academics are really not all that bad... Those who turn their heads to LSU won't even give the university a chance, especially since they know how bad of a state Louisiana can be. However, I believe LSU's academic reputation will get better and better due to the new business center, vastly expanded engineering college, and other projects going on around campus. Other than that, people mostly view LSU as a party/football school.

UT and A&M are ridiculously hard to get into. Florida and obviously Vandy are only tough ones in SEC, maybe UGA.

Here in Utah, most respect the SEC and acknowledge LSU as a power house.
They always 'love' my accent.
They are intigued by cajun food.

Overall, being from Louisiana is a great icebreaker and conversation starter.

I've lived and traveled on the East Coast for the past 20 years.

Academically speaking, they just understand that LSU is another big state school, not bad or good necessarily...that if you can make you way through it that says at least something about you (degree means something of course).

They think party school with close proximity to the big easy, great sports, food, and UNIQUE lifestyle and culture.

They ASSUME you love to party arse and can handle yourself in a social setting.

Mostly, they are curious and in awe given their staid, suburban upbringing and background.

I lived in South Carolina from 88-96. Gamecock fans were very complimentary of LSU, some said it was their 2nd favorite school. Clemson fans disdain anything that isn't Clemson.

My friends from Dallas think of LSU as the team who can't beat Bama.

I'm not trying to be a Debbie downer but at least 95% of people in the US don't even know what the college World Series is.

I live in Birmingham ( a sports crazed southern city) and very few people are aware LSU is in the CWS

Y'all can save the "Bama" bull shite but I'm willing to bet it's the same story in Atlanta and Nashville

In short, most people think LSU is "cool."

It's a big state university and people usually respect it. Younger crew thinks it's hip, most people respect the football, and yankees think it's full of hicks.

All in all a decent idea of it.

I've lived here (Mandeville) most of my life and I agree with this. (Also, Houston for 3 years, Pensacola for 6 and BR since 2014)

LSU and New Orleans Historical/French Quarter/Aquarium/Zoo/Restaurants are just about it for me as far as Louisiana is concerned.

And LSU is slipping in that regards, as it's becoming an annoyance to attend games with all the irritating recorded music and a higher % of newbie corporate season ticket give-a-way attendees every season.

Definitely not into the Louisiana Party/Drinking Culture at all and never have been.

at all the individuals that have never lived anywhere else and think that this place is the center of the known universe.
