Can we get BK to meet up with Saban and see how he gets his first rounders to play in non playoff bowl games?
Does it involve a gun to the head? Threats to family?

Entire Dline opting out except for Wingo is inexcusable. Something needs to be done to disincentivize this or just decline bowl bids. I hope this doesn’t turn into another Texas Bowl debacle

Really? Why not? LSU didn't opt out of providing a free education and a world stage to display their talents. Why is the university the only one expected to keep its end of the deal? Coddle much?
The university makes millions off of these athletes. They got their moneys worth on the scholarships they give out.
One way to limit opting out is to have the bowls give bonuses for playing in the bowl game to the players.

Sounds nice, but since the bowls are all about lining their pockets with $$$ themselves I wouldn’t look for it to happen.

We are playing Purdues 2nd team with an interim coach

Bowl-game means absolutely nothing! I think it is very important some younger guys get this experience and they will play very hard to try and make a statement for next season!

Thank you. It’s for the players. The returning players who didn’t play much in the regular season get to get valuable practice reps, and a little bit of exposure playing on national tv. And for the seniors who don’t have an NFL future—which is most of them—or the ones who do, but choose to play anyway (pretty sure Baskerville, Bernard-Converse, and Ward are all playing at least) get to don the purple and gold and run out of the tunnel one last time with their brothers.
This will be the last chance for a lot of guys across the country to suit up and play the very last football game of their lives, a sport they’ve been playing—and sacrificing for—for most of their lives. That’s a big deal.
And I think the sacrificing all these guys do is underrated, and no matter the bowl and no matter the teams’ records, the bowl is a nice little reward for that sacrifice. I played college baseball for a second, and my days were brutal. A typical fall day (in-season was actually easier):
—Up at 5:30 for a 6 am run
—back home just in time to shower and get to class by 8
—all classes has to be taken from 8-12
—be at the field at 1 for “voluntary” early work in the cage and off the tee and taking so many ground balls you almost throw up
—actual practice from 3-5:45
—get to the gym and workout—hard—for an hour
—back to the field at 7 to fix the field for the next day
—finally home around 8 to fit in any studying and social life you could until time for bed (we had no delusions of playing for a significant championships at the time—like 80% of the 130 FBS CFB teams, so we sacrificed sleep like you can only do when you’re young, and went out most nights)
—back up at 5:30 am on 3ish hours sleep to do it all over again
And that was just baseball at a G5 school. It’s much more difficult, physically, to play football. I’m not gonna say it’s sucks being a football player at an FBS school these days—especially a really good P5–there are a TON of perks, especially these days. But they still have to sacrifice almost all of their time and bodies for those scholarships and perks, valuable as they may be.
So guys on 7-5 teams that may not have had “successful” seasons for whatever reasons, still made those sacrifices, and it’s hard for me to understand the hate for them getting to have a nice little vacation with some fun activities, good food, and a little schwag as a tiny reward for their year-long sacrifices.
And I also don’t get the hate for all the “meaningless” bowls from a fan perspective either. Nobody is forcing you to watch any of them. Enjoy the holiday season with your families. Again, the bowls are for the players. But if LSU is playing a game in their uniforms against another school in their uniforms, and they’re keeping score, you can bet your arse I’ll be watching 1 final time before the 1st Saturday of September, no matter who’s underneath those helmets, and pulling like hell for them to play well and win.

expand playoffs and do away with bowl games. Who in the hell wants to play an exhibition bowl game anyway?

LOL - like Brennan tripping on a dock or the really sad crash a few years back with Colby Delahoussaye and all those kickers. Could go on and on.

I think 12 is the max. More than that... you end up looking like the NCAA tournament.

Solid post except for this silliness.
To help make your point, even a relatively minor injury can affect performance for pro days and combine.
So I don’t like it, but I’m just sitting and watching.
As an aside, I don’t understand why guys like Bryce Young and Will Anderson are playing. Good for them but not sure it’s wise.

After hanging out with a few when I was in college I will never feel sorry for an LSU football player.

frick a bowl game these kids came to LSU to get into the league and frick playing in a meaningless bowl game to blow out an ACL.
Posted on 12/22/22 at 8:30 am to WDAIII
Yah if cant finiah the season then that kid needs to pay back half the semester. Its what would happen for grades if uou decided to skip finals on ur grades you would fail that semester so why not have the ncaa make a deal with each nil company with that school to have the kid play in bowl game ? If thw school gives you a shot to show your talent u owe thw school your time to participate at least in games

Can we get BK to meet up with Saban and see how he gets his first rounders to play in non playoff bowl games?
1, they’re playing in the Sugar Bowl, not the Citrus. Still, it is very impressive that Young and Anderson are choosing to play. But this is not Saban’s 1st year at Bama. It’s taken him over a decade to create the culture where guys who are probably both set to go top 5 (of not top 2) have chosen to play in a non-playoff NY6 bowl game. And I don’t think Saban pressured them to play at all—he would have respected their choice not to play had they decided that—he’s just instilled in his players over the years to make the right choices, and these 2 particular guys think playing 1 last time for the Alabama Crimson Tide is the right choice for them (they do have a ton of guys in the portal who aren’t playing).
But this is the kind of culture Kelly us trying to create at LSU. It’s why he’s so meticulous in vetting the character of his high school recruits and wants as many from Louisiana as possible. He wants guys he thinks will stick around to be developed by him and his staff, so that they can have years of instilling into them the importance of making good decisions, making them habits that will benefit them in both their post-LSU playing careers and life in general.
It’s why he’s also meticulous in choosing guys from the portal too. He had the quote during the year about how the portal can be good to fill holes, but “you better know who you’re bringing in.” He’s not just gonna take the best guys at positions of need—they have to be good, but also have good character, the kind that will buy in and be “in alignment.” And why he recently said we’re not gonna take anybody with just 1 year of eligibility anymore. He wants them to develop in HIS system, not just as football players, but more so as young men. Because then he can trust them to make the right choices.
Before the portal and these Young and Anderson decisions to play in the Sugar Bowl when they’ll both be in the NFL last year, we were wondering how Saban was able to get 4 and 5 stars to wait sometimes until their JR or even SR years to start while we seemed to have to play all our studs early and get 3 years out of them until they bounced. It was a big part of Bama’s dominance—not only did they have great players, but they had relatively older teams too. And it’s because Saban recruited either high character guys or guys he thought would buy into his process to be physically and mentally prepared to play when it was their turn to play. And if they didn’t immediately buy in, they were promptly processed and shown the door. Make no mistake, Saban’s blueprint is exactly what Kelly is trying to follow, he is trying to build the exact same kind of culture at LSU. Now, Saban built his monster before the portal and NIL, so Kelly will have to be flexible and adjust to this new era of CFB. But he’s already shown to be able to adapt and be very forward-thinking and proactive rather than reactive. And that’s exactly the kind of coach we need right now. Someone who is proactive, has a solid plan, is intentional in his decisions to make that plan work, but not so rigid that he won’t adjust the plan as needed in order to achieve his ultimate goal of creating the best culture possible for LSU to be a consistent championship program.
