I disagree... Simmons had has chances to take over games and NOT disappear for 10 mins at a time... And just like last night when the game was on the line he just didn't seem to have IT.......... Look. I am not a JJ lover, In fact he should be gone and LSU should get them A top notch coach.....

He doesn't play like a big man though. He has no post game and no jump shot

So he's averaging 19.3 points on 56% shooting with no post game and no jump shot. Oh, ok
He's 6'10 and agile, playing against 6'8 guys with decent coordination and/or guys who are only out there because they are big, at this level.
He won't be facing that in the NBA. You think he's a big man? Most of the 4's and 5's in the league would absolutely LOVE having Simmons try to guard them. He'd get posterized so many times it wouldn't even be funny after awhile.

I get the whole potential thing, and he'll go high, but if I was picking #1 I might have second thoughts. What I see out of Simmons at LSU: no scoring ability except off transistion, no post game to speak of, no midrange game at all, no perimeter shot at all. He's a good passer, but for all that touted "basketball IQ", 90% of his passes are meaningless. He's doubled and finds the open man on the perimeter, but that's not brilliance.

He's not making Victor a 20 pt scorer consistently with feeds, when Victor has yet to be truly stopped 1 on 1 yet. You'd think that Simmons would be able to just use his mobility to draw Victor's man out of position, and then dish it off.

We have a team full of streaky shooters, which by definition means they are capable of getting hot. When Simmons has passed the ball back out, I've yet to see him feed a guy who's heating up, he just makes slick passes to random players. Hell, Quarterman seems to find the hot player more often. Ben would rather make the no-look cross-court skip pass to the corner... to Malone. Maybe because it highlights his vision for the scouts, I don't know.

For a guy intent on bringing the ball up and handling it at the point, he doesn't try to command tempo a lot. He'll push it at times, but I really haven't yet seen him control the play, slow things down, and make a brilliant pass to a guy for a layup. You're telling me that Victor or Quarterman can't convert a lob pass or make a layup off a cut? Or Blakeney, or even Hornsby?
If Simmons is truly that aware with the ball, he should be able to dictate plays like that down the stretch, even if he doesn't have a 10 ft jumper. Just moving in the lane will distort a defense.

I just don't know... he lacks the competitive fire to take over a game late, he lacks a go-to shot or move inside, and he hasn't adjusted his game to work with the talent around him here. I'd be real hesitant to build a team around him. I think he'd do well as somebody's wingman, but he's not the alpha dog.

FTR Ben is 19 turning 20 in July.

Did Tyrus Thomas ever developed a jump shot? I'm guessing no since he's no longer in the league.

Scobb, you must be a coach at some level, I'm guessing HS, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's a small college. Excellent post.

Incorrect. I have not said "this". I say he is actually underrated. And I say that as sincerely as humanly possible.

This thread is plenty of proof. These guys think Simmons should come back and he isn't a lottery pick.

I've got a strong suspicion that they'd take Doug McDermott or Jimmer Fredette over Simmons if given the choice in the NBA.

I can sort of kinda liven with criticism of his college presence, but it takes minimal basketball knowledge to understand why the NBA is salivating over him. Nothing he's done at LSU has changed that perception.

Dunno about overrated but he certainly hasn't been what many LSU fans thought.... a player to lead LSU into the Sweet 16 or Elite 8
