2008 Bama game - Archrival Saban returns to Tiger Stadium with the number one ranking. Death Valley is in full throat. LSU chokes the game away.

So we choked the game away when we lost in overtime to the top team in the country?

And "big games" are when a team is in the top ten? You do realize that UF may still win the East this year right? And that MSU is sitting at 7-2.

And guess what? If you go to the game and sit stone-faced and silent for 60 minutes, you're responsible for diluting the atmosphere of the game. Origins of Apathy? Fans who can't feel joy for the team but refuse to give up their tickets to others who could scream and stomp in bliss for 60 minutes just because they have a chance to see their team play.

Who every said I sit stonefaced? Another simpleton tactic...invent a strawman argument (in this case, you insinuate that I am something that I am not) and then destroy said strawman (stating that I need to take a particular action based on your invented idea -- the strawman).

It is another stupid and ineffective argument...

Bullshite!! There are only 12 games ALL YEAR long! Only 7 or 8 home games. The fan base needs to get off their unentightled asses and quit being such pussys! God I'm getting sick of LSU's fanbase!

Wait ... I thought it was the emotional fans who stood up and yelled things that were supposed to be the ones bringing the program down.

I assumed it to be applied when you characterize your own mood as apathetic, apprehensive, and disappointed. It does not correspond that someone could feel those things and yet exhibit signs of exuberance and excitement.

Ill throw my two cents in (and I think the OP is spot-on), the LSU fanbase is apathetic because LSU football is by-in-large not fun to watch. I will admit that sometimes when I wake up on Saturdays before big games, I almost have a sense of dread because I know that I am about to go through 3.5 hours of torture of sloppy play, poor coaching and uninspired football. I love LSU with a passion and it is simply painful to watch.
You should have just said that you're a fairweather fan.

If we ever want to win another West Title we have to win some of these "big games". We are not pre-Saban because Les wins alot of games just not the big games anymore. I am hoping for the best, but preparing for a loss.

It's funny how a great original post is being destroyed.

Miss State and Florida (while they're down) are not big wins. Please stop acting like permanent B teamers.

Why would he do that when, judging by his post, he clearly is not.

This was my exact quote...

I cheer just like any other LSU fan. However, the OP speaks of the fanbase being apathetic...the reason for apathy is that people are seeing an elite program play a very sloppy brand of football.

Did you enjoy watching the end of the UTenn game (or the whole game for that matter)? What about McNeese? Watching a team play flat and sloppy is not fun...it is frustrating. Am I less of a fan for pointing out the obvious? You people realize the world is a little more complex than that I hope.

I think there's a lot of merit in what you're saying, but you fail to mention that often you can't decide on a "big win" until after the season plays out. Obviously 2007 Va. Tech was a statement, but if they go on to lose 3 more games that year, is it a "big win"? We all thought 2008 Auburn was a "big win", beating a Top 10 at their place and Lee emerging as the QB. Then they went into the tank and that win didn't mean much any more.

stop watching the games and stop going to the stadium. Give your tickets to someone

Maybe he doesn't want to because they are his to waste.

Chances are he had the tickets for a while now because he bought them when you couldn't give two tickets away (like I did) and held on to them. We got lucky with Saban when owning seats became a premium, and now still have them (same two seats we had through Arnsparger, Archer, Hallman, Dinardo, and Saban). When some of you say stuff like, "give your tickets up" you're not taking into account why we have our seats to begin with. We sat through some miserable times, had them through great times, and now have them through "blah" times. But, they are our seats and no you can't have them!

I am with the OP on this one 100%.

How is a team with a five star quarterback, two NC's in the last four years, and currently in control of their own destiny in the East not a big win? If your only criteria is a top ten team, then you might have that chance once a year, twice on a strong year.

the bottom line is we never expect to win those big games anymore. you get excited when you know the coaching staff is putting a good game plan in and will give your talented team their best opportunity to win.

let's face it - we expect to get our rear ends kicked when we go against bama and arkansas, and we are terrified of Ole Miss because they can score. Hopes were high before Auburn, but that loss pretty much kicked us in the groin.

from what we have seen this year, and from what Coach miles says he will continue, the offense is just too damn sorry to give us a realistic chance to compete for championships. The defense is good, but the defense and special teams have to be responsible for 21 points against the good teams or we can't win. That's not something that happens every week.

The only way you can get pumped up is if you feel you are the underdog who might come up with an heroic win.

The world is complex. Watching football games is not.

I get frustated, I get pissed, I throw my drink at the wall. Tennessee pissed me off. McNeese pissed me off. But I screamed until I was hoarse for the entire game. At the end of the day, if you want to get pissed during the game, that's fine. It happens to everyone and is completely beyond control.

That does not mean it should be the only thing you take from the game. It does not mean it should influence your anticipation of the next game. Something bad happens. You get pissed. You express your frustration. And then guess what? The team runs another play.

The OP explains exactly why apathy eventually overrides what you just replied. If it was just last year, fine. It was a rebuilding year. We got pissed and didn't do so hot, but so what right? But that's not the case. It has been the same thing for 3 years in a row now. 3. Three.

I don't want you to give your seats away. I want you to act like you want to be standing in front of them inside the stadium watching your team pour their hearts onto the field.

I would just like some fans to be a little realistic, on both sides of the argument. We act like we all feel so differently, but we don't. We just have different approaches. Everyone sees the problems, the frustrations, and the mistakes. But everyone also sees our history, and the state of college football in general, and are left wondering what would suffice to meet the expectations of our program.

People are apathetic because we are helpless, and that's why we're here, complaining and arguing, over and over again.

This would be an honest and good point if 2008 and 2009 had not happened. If you read most any study on intelligence (not saying that I am overly intelligent), people who are on the upper end of the IQ spectrum have an ability to recognize patterns.

I think one could be on the lower end of the IQ spectrum and see the pattern of Les Miles and the way he prepares his teams, not only on a week by week basis, but a year by year basis.

The reason I anticipate sloppy play (turnovers and penalties) and time management issues (Ole Miss, UT, Auburn in 2007 and really this year's UF game) is because they happen over and over again.

As a fanbase, our fans see this pattern as well and thus, contrary to your premise, rightfully in a lot of instances, anticipate bad outcomes...even in winning.

I cheer until I cannot speak every weekend. That doesn't mean the product on the field is what it could be though. To the contrary, it could be much worse...I would still cheer until I am blue in the face.
