Origins of Apathy: LSU Has Not Won a Big Game in Three Years

Since the topic du jour appears to be the listless state of the fanbase, I thought I would advance my own theory.
I believe the fanbase is lethargic because we haven't won a big game in three seasons. LSU has had multiple opportunities to prove that it still belongs in the elite echelon of college football and it has failed each and every time:
2008 Florida game - Nationally televised night game on CBS. LSU gets blown out in large part due to its ludicrously porous defense:
2008 UGA game - Nationally televised CBS game in Tiger Stadium against a top ten opponent. LSU's atrocious defense yields fifty points in a loss;
2008 Bama game - Archrival Saban returns to Tiger Stadium with the number one ranking. Death Valley is in full throat. LSU chokes the game away.
2009 Florida - Undefeated LSU versues undefeated Florida in a nationally televised night game in Tiger Stadium. Number 1 versus Number 3. Optimal environment. The lubricated hordes don gold and thunder mightily at kickoff. Something special is in the offing. Then the offense takes the field. Torpor and dread result.
2009 Bama - Another opportunity to beat an undefeated Bama squad. Three quarters of brilliance followed by a fourth quarter collapse. Spirits sink as cramps, poor tackling angles, and a blind replay official kill LSU.
2010 Auburn - Undefeated LSU versus undefeated Auburn with the SEC West hanging in the balance. The defense is curiously passive. The offense is just...curious. LSU loses another heartbreaker, making it highly improbable that we will win the SEC West.
There are only so many times that a fanbase can whip itself into a frenzy. There are only so many times that Tiger Stadium can rise to Olympian heights. There are only so many disappointments a man can stand before he begins to distance himself from the wellspring of his sorrows. In the last two and a half seasons, LSU has had six chances to defeat Top 10 teams and reclaim its throne. The Tigers have come up short every single time. Combined with the clock management fiascos and the tiresome close calls against lesser opponents, it's really no wonder the fanbase is skeptical and leery.

We beat Florida at their place this year. West Virigina, North Carolina, Miss State this year. Auburn and Arkansas were both big games last year.Killed Ga Tech 2 years ago (big bowl game). Do I need to continue?

None of those were against Top 10 teams. Not one. Moreover, LSU hasn't beaten a single SEC team that was ranked in the final AP poll over the last two years. As for this season, West Virginia and North Carolina aren't ranked. They both have three or more losses. As does Florida. MSU appears to be our "marquee" win. So you can continue, but you'll fail to show that LSU has won any major games against Top 10 teams. They just haven't.

It seems to me that you're assuming that the relatively few posters on here represent the entire fanbase....which i dont think is true. I can guarantee you that the LSU campus will not be "lethargic" Saturday morning.

This topic hasn't been discussed on this forum at all in the past two weeks. Congratulations on your original thoughts.

quote:*Ahem. I believe maybe you might want to revisit your definition of "big game." I think your list of big games is... a list of good games, nice wins, but not a list of BIG games at all.
Do I need to continue?

None of these were BIG GAMES!

I think when you're counting teams like Auburn in a down year, Florida in a down year, and Arkansas or Georgia Tech in any year as BIG games, then you pretty much can expect the prosecuter to rest his case.
Did you include back to back losses to Ole Miss in embarrassing fashion?

Well, it explains a lot of it, but not all of the flatness. A whole lot of it is people losing faith (A) in Gary Crowton, (B) that Gary Crowton will ever get replaced, (C) that LSU will ever be able to recruit and properly coach a top-notch SEC-caliber QB into proper form, and (D) that even if A, B, & C, were all corrected, that Miles would start creating some new drama to mess it all up anyway.

I think his point was we are not a top 10 team either. Look at where we finished the last two years. Yes we could have beat those teams, but did not. Until we do so, I don't think we are a top 10 team. I think we are mediocre at best. If we fix the offense, we could be great. If it doesn't happen this offseason, I don't know if I can watch another year of JJ, JL and Crowton.

Those teams you listed are a combined 70-7. Of those 7 losses, 4 of them were to Alabama or Florida. News flash, they were top 10 teams becuase they were really great and hardly lost to anyone.

Hey, I posted this fact more than a week ago....

Ill throw my two cents in (and I think the OP is spot-on), the LSU fanbase is apathetic because LSU football is by-in-large not fun to watch. I will admit that sometimes when I wake up on Saturdays before big games, I almost have a sense of dread because I know that I am about to go through 3.5 hours of torture of sloppy play, poor coaching and uninspired football. I love LSU with a passion and it is simply painful to watch.
Nobody likes to see their child fail at anything and I feel like I am watching my child fail, through no fault of his own, over and over again.
Moreover, we have a coach that cannot speak the english language, a fact that has been recognized and publisized nationally now.
Bottomline, it is just not fun right now. You couple over the top expecations with ugly results and your get apathy after three years. We could be Texas, so I should just enjoy that we have been winning I suppose, no matter how ugly it may be.

If this is true, then stop watching the games and stop going to the stadium. Give your tickets to someone who will represent the team with passion and fervor. I promise you there are many of them still out there.

And we see an example of someone who clearly doesn't get the whole picture. This is always the elementary response from someone without the moral clarity or ability to understand a particular situation.
I couldn't stop watching the games, or going to games if I wanted to because of my devotion to the university and its athletic programs.
Does a person stop going to their child's little league game because the team sucks or the kid sucks or the coaching sucks? Hell no, they support them no matter what. Does that mean that it is always fun? Hell no, it doesn't.
Think before posting like such a damn simpleton...it makes the entire fanbase look bad.

And guess what? If you go to the game and sit stone-faced and silent for 60 minutes, you're responsible for diluting the atmosphere of the game. Origins of Apathy? Fans who can't feel joy for the team but refuse to give up their tickets to others who could scream and stomp in bliss for 60 minutes just because they have a chance to see their team play.
