Currently talking to a former member of TGBFTL, and he sees some truth to the safety angle, saying there's so much shite on the sidelines anyways and all the bands hanging out there before and after halftime just make it worse. I'm sure someone mentioned some liability issue with having everyone crammed down there and someone finally decided to do something.

But he also thinks that it could be that no one really cares about the visiting band performing. It was never a big deal to him or the rest of the band to play at opposing stadiums. Just didn't care.

I mean, there isn't a ton of room between the endzone and the stands, is there?

thats really all LSU does lately. They throw out some weak excuse for why they are changing something and expect us to believe it.

I wouldn't be surprised if they did this to specifically stick it to Alabama. Alabama's band always acts like trash when they come to Tiger Stadium.

The safety issue spin is a bunch of bs. Bands don't get in fights with other bands on the sidelines. This isn't Drumline.

Yall zee how many people start crowding those sidelines and end zones at the end of the 2nd? I can easily see it being a safety issue.

I mean, shite, it's a band safety issue for the Auburn kickers to even be out there already

I'm certainly not, but if I was Bama, AU, aTm, then I wouldn't let the full LSU band come to an away game if they wouldn't permit my full band to travel to their stadium.
They aren't banned from coming here, they just can't perform at halftime.

I am a little bit upset about this though because I was looking forward to the biennial booing the crap out of Alabama's band as they take the field.

it basically has the same affect. Bands don't want to travel a whole band if they can't perform

What value is there in the trip for a band to play on the field in the first place? If it is a money thing, playing at Tiger Stadium at halftime isn't worth $120,000 anyway.

LINK

quote:

“Obviously, these games are important to Jacksonville State and we’re very appreciative to Auburn for giving us the opportunity, for keeping the money in-state and playing an FCS school,” Greg Seitz, JSU’s interim athletics director, said Friday by phone from the team’s pre-game hotel in Prattville.

Seitz said the games are also important because of the publicity JSU gets from playing high-profile opponents. JSU’s players will get to see lots of familiar faces, as both Auburn and the Gamecocks recruit heavily among Alabama high schools.

Other than the date and the amount of the guarantee, there was just one other difference between the two contracts. The 2011 version allocated 300 complimentary tickets to the Gamecocks. This year, JSU gets those 300 plus 600 for its band, the Marching Southerners, who are expressly invited in the contract for a halftime performance.

“That’s in every one of our contracts now,” said Seitz, who has negotiated such deals for JSU for the last several years. “We want the Southerners on the field when we play the FBS opponents. They’re a very important part of the university.”

He said the Gamecocks will get $600,000 to play at LSU in 2016.

LINK

quote:

The athletes on the field might miss the band’s music and the other benefits that come with its presence, too: The coterie of fans who normally follow the Southerners for their performances likely won’t make the trip to Baton Rouge either, Bodiford thinks.

The money that would’ve gone toward buses and lodging in Baton Rouge will instead be saved for the same in Frisco, Texas, the band director said, where the Football Championship Subdivision national title will again be played.

“That’s a much more important game,” Bodiford said. He feels certain the Gamecocks will, once again, reach it.

Athletic departments share money with the music department to make sure the bands show up. The money's in the budget. If they don't spend it, they'll lose it next year.

And if we're talking about wasteful expenses, how many JSU administrators and dignitaries will be flying first class, staying at luxury hotels, and racking up crazy bills?

How about all the walk-ons, redshirt players, and injured players? I mean, they're not playing. Technically that's a waste too.

All I know is that it looks like LSU broke its contract with Jacksonville State and just got back 600 complementary lower-level seats can sell for face value. Pretty shitty decision.

maybe LSU was embarrassed at how Bama brings a full band to TS every other year and yet we only bring a pep band to Tuscaloosa

Waiting for LSU's band to play then trying to play over them right after they start playing. Then staying in the stands and playing for far longer than any other band in the SEC after the game. (Yeah I know LSU should try winning and that would stop).

There's a reason why Alabama's band is the only band that gets booed in Tiger Stadium.

like we sit there and wait for them to start playing. We play immediately after the play is dead, and like TGBFTL we have specific cheers for a certain play, especially on defense. If we actually waited until the other band started playing we run the risk of still playing during the next football play, which is a penalty.

It's so we don't get caught in the cross flow when everyone is leaving the stadium. Now THAT'S actually a safety precaution. LSU does the same thing when they come to BDS. We just take longer because we have more people. We do this at home too.

I think its a shame. College bands are part of the overall tradition and pageantry that make college football so special. I've always enjoyed watching and listening to the USC Trojan band play "Fight On" or the Michigan band play "Hail to the Victors" when they visit South Bend (Granted, I enjoy it less when ND is losing, but hey its not the bands fault).

Bands, even the opposing team's band, are part of the whole scene... just like tailgating before the games. It seems like all of these things are under pressure and changing. Not good.

This is near the dumbest thing I ever heard. This is sure to mean that LSU will not travel a full band to away stadiums. Watching the A&M band is one of the coolest things ever. Also don't forget, the first time Ole Miss ever played Slow Dixie, it was in Tiger Stadium and the crowd gave them a standing ovation. If the administration really felt strongly about this, make every member of the opposing team's band sign a waiver.
