That's a really good job for a first coaching job with no experience.

You're right, he is arguably better at his position. 8X ALL PRO
MF'n this.
As far as recruiting goes, his pitch is simple. I am a freaking 8x Pro-Bowler in the league you want to be in. Let me show you how to get there.

Mawae was the guy I wanted all along.
- Loves Louisiana
- All-American at LSU
- LSU Hall of Famer
- All-Pro in the NFL
- NFLPA President
- Great guy
He has ties to Louisiana and the university, so he's got a natural passion for the school on the recruiting trail. He carries around instant credibility due to his success in college and the pros, and he provides a unique perspective to recruits and players. Not only can he tell you about what it takes to be a successful player in college and the NFL, but he can shed light on the behind the scenes aspects of the league. President of the NFLPA is a great feather in his cap, IMO. Beyond that, he's a family-oriented guy that would mesh very well with the LSU staff.
His detractors pointed to a lack of coaching experience, but experience is overrated. Technique is what matters, and Mawae obviously had the technique to be great. He's a great communicator and would have done an awesome job. Does anyone think we'd actually be worse with Mawae instead of Grimes?
I hope Mawae continues to hang around until LSU wises up and hires him.
Experience is not the end-all-be-all in coaching these days. Look at the youth in college and pro football today. Guys are making gigantic jumps from position to position because they bring something new to the table. NFL teams are targeting young, innovative college coaches, and major universities are looking at coordinators with little experience to be highly-paid decision makers. Football is moving further and further away from the regurgitation of experienced guys that can't evolve with the game.

175 rushing yards per game.

Grimes achieved great success at ASU, with four of his 2001 seniors drafted into the NFL

is 2006 BYU linemen blocked for the nation's fourth best offense, averaging over 465 yards per game including 141.9 on the ground, and were a large part of the Cougars winning the MWC Championship. BYU finished 11–2 and ranked 15th in the Coaches' Poll.
He's got a mediocre resume at best.

Does anyone know what the frick is wrong. TheOLine gets dominated by everyone so far except for two cup cake games. UlM did as well??? Is it Porter? If hiring Mawae would help he would be here today if it was up to me. Time to push the Panic button!!

Im sorry, but you cant step into a job like this with zero experience.
Can I ask why can't someone step into a first year coaching job at LSU? Especially if the guy played in the NFL for 16 years? He must know the position
I think 2 years at Sam Houston is a waste.
With what you said above DO you think our OL would be any worse with KM as coach? I bet he would be able to teach the proper technique very vocally and forcefully

quote:16 years in the NFL should take precedence over his lack of actual coaching experience. Really hard to believe that he played for 16 years in the pros and couldn't have communicated some of that knowledge to the OL at LSU. I'd like to know how he feels about Grimes "Trying" to teach the current LSU OL Zone Blocking. Obviously they're not getting it.
Because he had never coached before.

'08 line was pretty good imo , I expected a slight drop when Helms, Hitt and Herm left, but Black 75% and Joe B. were still there to anchor the youngsters, but they were a bit light in the pants with T Bob and some others.
I recall talk of a Crowton / Miles strife over zone scheme and recruiting lighter for it back then.

Finally someone posted that many are rushing to judgement on Grimes who has just been OL coach here for four games.
Let's see what happens the rest of this season and how the OL recruiting goes.

Don't expect to get a decent answer from Books. He used to be a good poster especially on the recruiting board until he turned into an anti everything lsu does poster. Now he is horrid.

Kevin's always been a favorite of mine. Always gave max effort, even though he played for a sub-par team most of the time. Wonderful family man also.
Posted on 9/24/14 at 11:44 am to monsterballads
So he doesnt have any coaching experience, why cant LSU bring him in as an assistant-assistant line coach? See if he's any good or not, if he is, move him up the ladder. If not, no big deal. its at least good PR for the team. He's a very smart sucessful guy. Wouldnt hurt to have him around the program in any capacity.

No one has a clue if he'd be a good coach. He's never done it. Too much risk for a program like LSU to take.

I know we have a new O-line coach, but shite it's not like Grimes came in to a job with a bare cupboard. frick.

Bottom line, Les did not want to hire someone that knows the position better than himself.
