How much worse could he do?

I'm not ready to give up on Grimes yet, but he certainly has disappointed me as a coach thus far.

And, yes, Kevin does not have a lot of coaching experience, but he played in the NFL for 16 seasons . The guy is a specialist. It doesn't surprise me that he was the 2nd most attractive applicant. He certainly could do the job.

Again, I'm not ready to give up on Grimes yet.

Yep. Just like some did will Blackwell for exposing miles' terrible game preparation on 1-9.

My only beef with Blackwell was the route he took to bash Miles. And he lost all credibility saying he'd take Kilff Kinsgbury over Miles...

First off, it's a little early for knee jerk reactions on Grimes. Everybody loved him on here a month ago. Let's see how it goes.

As for Mawae, I wanted to see him in the role, but I can understand Les not bringing him on due to lack of coaching experience. That said, the guy represents LSU well and has more cred than just about anyone who has played on the OL. I have a feeling that he would have an advantage in recruiting OL talent from outside the contiguous 48 as well.

I understand this is the reason, but this is such a shitty, stupid, dumbass line of thinking for hiring an Oline coach.

This. KM has probably forgotten more about OLine play than Grimes and Les combined know.

I don't understand the argument of "he has no coaching experience" when talking about a guy that had the type of career KM had.

I guess all you guys saying that wouldn't hire Peyton Manning to be LSU's QB coach.

First, Kevin is a good guy. I think he'd probably do a good job...maybe. But I say that to say this....simply because you know how to play a POSITION (center), doesn't mean you know how to coach the whole line. He had a coach in the pros, ya know...who taught him how to play well. He was very good at his spot, but simply knowing drills doesn't mean you can teach technique. Drills are different than technique. You must do drills to teach technique, but you simply can't say "run into this guy between these cones" and expect that the result will be what you expect. For now, grimes was the right hire.

I swear, you'd think every pro bowler would be million dollar coaches. They must all know how to coach since they PLAYED well, right?

I'm all for an entirely new coaching staff. Miles has been a disappointment year after year and I don't see his decisions getting any better #HarboughNation

Just so you know, Miles was only out of college for 5 years when he returned to Michigan as an assistant coach.

I understand being a pro doesn't necessarily mean you can coach, but Miles was given a chance. He turned out to be pretty fantastic. Kevin played in the NFL for 16 seasons at center. That's remarkable. It's not like he only did what he was told. The man became the leader of a team. Sure, he had a coach, but that doesn't mean Kevin CAN'T teach.

Again, Kevin was second in line for the job. They obviously felt he has the capacity to teach.

You know what I'm saying?! I mean, shite, pro bowl centers don't fricking grow on trees. Why do you think the Colts front office wouldn't get rid of Jeff Saturday? Peyton would've lost his shite.

No, I basically agree with your premise sabi, but keep in mind he came back as a GA for the coach whom he had played under. There was, no doubt, a better familiarity there with Coach Schembechler and Miles than there is with Miles and Mawae. I say again that I think Kevin would do a good job, but I can see no fault, given the options, in why Grimes was hired.

That's a good point. And, I'm not ready to give up on Grimes yet either. But, I can't say that I'm not disappointed. In fact, I'm pretty shocked.

I think he would have given us a huge recruiting advantage.

I'm not saying guys wouldn't want to play for Grimes, but could you imagine having an 8-time ALL FREAKING PRO Offensive Lineman walk into your living room asking you to learn under him?!

Definitely. He could go into a kids home...tell them about his experience at LSu and oh yeh I played in the NFL for 15+ years and was an all pro. Also he is from Louisiana. I see no negatives in hiring him.

Yep. Also did GA equivalent work for the Bills I think?

Nothing major full time.

LSU oline is made up of bigger dudes similar to the early/mid 90s Dallas Cowboys' oline. They used a man on man blocking scheme and dominated. Isnt LSU using that soft zone scheme? That may be the problem?

I don't know about it being "soft", just a different technique. Pretty sure the Broncos used zone blocking schemes to run for a million yards. Teams use it with great success to open holes, but it is a major change from just road grading people.
