Lost me right there. Jefferson may surpass Tyler in rushing yards (he needs 91 to pass HT), but Herb rushed for 23 touchdowns while sharing the backfield with LSU's career all purpose yardage leader.

Winner JJ
This is closer to a "pick 'em" - Herb was 26-5 as a starter, with a less dominating defense and lower overall talent level on the team (though Dinardo had corrected many of the Hallman-era deficiencies in that area by the end of Tyler's career).

I would also take Tyler's career passing stats well ahead of JJ's.
HT 434-715 for 60.7% with 40 TD's and 24 INT's with a rating of 141.48 in 36 games played
vs
JJ's 336-578 for 58.1% with 28 TD's and 18 INT's with a rating of 125.96 in 32 games played.
LINK
Also I think most objective observers would concur if they switched teams the current Tigers would be have had at least two more wins per season the last two years and the Tyler era Tigers would have had 2-4 less!

Anyone who favors JJ has not really been paying attention.

It's really not that close of a race. Herb Tyler. I could mention some of the same attributes that makes HT a better option at QB than JJ, but I think most of the pro-Tyler wing has already commented. The one thing that I'll say for HT, and that I always tell people when I talk about HT, is that he improved every year...which is really all you can ask of any college athlete. He was better as a sophmore than as frosh, better as a junior than as a sophmore, and so forth. Can't say that about JJ.
One other thing you can say about the HT era is that we won games because of the offense, not despite it.

Tyler could play and not loose composure like JJ.
JJ has more or better tools but Herb was a gamer.
Herb hands down. Not even close.

Funny, there sure is a lot of support for Herb Tyler in this thread. I vividly remember LSU fans calling for Bryan Sparancio to start in place of Herb just about every week.
I also remember, on several occasions, "fans" calling radio shows claiming that, "if Sparancio would start we'd win the NC!"
I'd vote for JJ in this debate...although I think the two quarterback do have many similarities.
Give me the future all-time winningest QB in LSU history; which is what JJ very well could be at the end of this season.

That is questionable at best. The LSU fans calling for Sparacino were a few callers from Denham Springs who for the first 7 or 8 weeks in 1996 persistently called into the B R sportstalk shows and made that ridiculous assertation. In fact that used to be a running joke with me and my buddies a couple who had actually seen Sparacino play in high school.
Thankfully (but unfortunately for the team and fans) that nonsense was permanently put to rest after the Alabama game in 96 when Tyler got hurt in the first quarter and Sparacino came in to post a horrific 8-35 for 133 yds and 2 ints and some of the worst thrown passes by an LSU qb until JJ got to LSU.
Unfortunately it cost a very good LSU team the game but Sparacino was pretty much never heard from again on the field and the callers mysteriously disappeared before the following Mondays talk shows.

I'd take Herb.
But if you're talking at the same point in their careers, it'd be a tough choice. Herb had a really good Sr. yr (25 total TDs in 10 games), hoping Jordan does the same. I think he's capable of it.

Damn it! That's twice in the past two weeks I've agreed with LE.

Yea neither Marcus nor JJ is who you would want running the LSU offense but given the choice of one or the other I think Marcus would be the best of two evils due to his leadership and presence.

I can't agree with that at all. I saw Marcus and JJ both play in the Cotton Bowl. Both of which had championship talent around them and JJ was the clearly the better QB and athlete.
I'd take JJ based on that performance; and the reports of his improvment; and his potential to have a great senior year over Marcus.

Honestly, I can't believe this is a debate. Herb Tyler was one of the best signal callers I've seen at LSU. That offense averaged 30+ points in 1998 under his watch, I believe. Unfortunately, we had Lou Tepper coaching the other side of the ball. Tyler was a machine the way he ran that offense. He made good decisions and rarely made mistakes. JJ has had some moments but isn't even in the same league as a QB that can run the offense, imo. And anybody that blamed Herb Tyler for any losses that season (instead of arguably the worst defense in LSU history) is a friggen idiot. But then our fanbase is full of them.
