Around the "I will not be the coach at Alabama" time, feelers were sent that Nick would be open to returning to LSU. They were met with thanks, but no thanks....which swayed him to Alabama.

The next year, Michigan was a real possibility for Miles. The combo of the leak and getting into the championship game shut it down.

Yeah because they are totally going to admit they failed at hiring Miles...

From what I heard about everything, Lloyd Carr hated Miles and retired when he did knowing that Les would have to deal with Michigan while trying to win a NC. I also heard Rich Rod was going to be the coach wherever Miles wasn't, so looks like we lucked out there.

And Miles was definitely offered again the 2nd time.

This thread will be full of people that hate Miles and claim there's no way any other school will have interest in him

I was told before Herbstreit said he was leaving that he wasn't leaving. He was pretty pissed at Herb for saying he was just as he said in the presser about having to tell his team the morning of the game that he wasn't going anywhere. It was not happening. I don't know why people relive this anyway. It's silly.

I agree. Miles is the kind of guy that when he heard this had leaked it did 2 things...

1. Pissed him off that it got leaked.
2. Made him determined that he was absolutely NOT going to let that be a distraction to his team.

You have this double secret inside source that nobody else has and they told you that.

100 percent truth. Saban was ready to come back. There was one man that said no after that game that made the difference.
As for Miles going to Michigan....I think he had his bags packed just in case.

Even in his presser that morning he said "ask me AFTER". Focusing on beating OSU for the title was all he wanted to focus on, and I honestly think he passed on his dream job in Ann Arbor to bring that crystal ball to BR.

I agree with your opening lines... but the line above is just CRAZY talk. It took a ridiculous amount of luck for us to fall into that BCS-CG. To think that Miles was thinking about the SEC CG is one thing, to think that he was thinking about the BCS CG after 2 losses and BEFORE even playing the SEC CG is borderline retarded.

You completely misunderstood my post, which looking at it again is actually my fault. I wasn't clear.

Miles was absolutely only focused on the SECCG that morning, that is why he said "ask me AFTER", basically saying, we'll talk about all of this tomorrow but right now I'm focused on getting this team an SEC Championship.

But later that night, with LSU winning and Missou and WVU losing, it immediately became clear that LSU was going to face OSU for the title, and that is when everything changed, imo. He then became totally focused on the BCSNCG, and I believe all communication was cut off by Miles.

Sorry if my original post wasn't clear

I do disagree with your comment that it took a "ridiculous amount of luck" for LSU to get back to #2.

I've posted about this a lot over the years, and the bottom line is, LSU needed Pitt to beat WVU, that was the ONLY real upset we needed, and as soon as Pat White got hurt, it wasn't even be that big of an upset really.

Sure, we needed Missou to lose as well, but just because they were ranked higher than OU didn't make it an upset. OU was actually favored to win that game and had already beaten Missou earlier that year. Everyone knew OU was the better team, and was much more experienced in big games than a Missou program that came from nowhere, as they weren't even ranked until October.

If you look at the rankings, the other teams ahead of us were Georgia, Kansas, and V Tech. Yeah LSU had dropped to #7 after losing to Arkansas, but that was the pollster mentality of dropping a team right after a loss, but we were always going to be able to move up again after the SECCG. Once Missou and WV lost there was never any way that Georgia was going over the SEC Champion, or that Kansas would go over anyone, or that VT would go over us after we beat them by six touchdowns.

Pitt beating WVU was all we needed that was "ridiculously lucky". And in a rivalry game like the back yard brawl, with Lesean McCoy running against an always suspect WVU defense, even that isn't crazy to think that an upset could happen. Especially with all of the pressure on WVU in a game where they were suddenly playing for a shot at the national title. When Pat White went down, I think most people watching that game had a feeling it wasn't Rich Rod's night.

From one of the coaches, who I am very close to, Les had one foot out the door. What changed his mind? Probably a few things, but mostly the opportunity to play in the extremely important games that LSU was given the right to participate in.

Herbie is well connected in Big 10 country and I think it was a done deal. However, the leak right before the SECCG killed the deal and with the SEC and potential NC on the line, Miles had no choice
i don't understand how people believe this. one thing i've learned over the years from talking with insiders is that no one knows what's going on in coaching searches except for a handful of people but, the media acts like they know and they're pretty much never right. when they're right, it's mostly luck. herb had no idea what he was talking about.

quote:

I don't think he was much of a candidate this last time around
this is what people are overlooking. miles has never been a serious candidate from all appearances. there never have been any snowy runway in west va moments. the people in charge for big blue aren't interested in miles. they never have been.

quote:

I wonder if Herbie leaked the info purposely to help OSU and to sabotage the UM hire. He knew that would kill the deal.
now this is just silly because it's based on the aforementioned speculation

Stuuuuupid

Eta: As a successful Michigan alumni who coached under Bo, I'm sure Miles gets called about his input on every coaching search they've had.

I think he was gone but backed out over the story leaking. Same thing with Saban to Texas. Coaches are control freaks, and like to do things on their own terms. Leaks piss them off.

Heres my understanding which is not fact.

Herbie's understanding from his source was Miles had been offered and had pretty much accepted. What he didnt know was Miles had accepted under the condition of no leaks before the championship. He was adamant that he owed his team 100% and that no distractions would be tolerated.

Since then it has been debated that Michigan never officially offered and Herbstreit was just embarrassingly wrong. Supposedly one of the big decision makers at Michigan(LLOYD Carr maybe?) was adamant about not hiring Miles. Seems there is bad blood between him and Miles dating back many years.
