Was not there, as I'm 48. My dad was, and I've talked to him several times about your specific request - a description of the mood - but I've generally asked more about the season, not the game. For those of Yall that were there (specifically Lsu students at the time), I'd be curious to hear if your memory was the same as my dads, which is this.

Many old timers repeat stories, and I've heard about the 1959 season probably 10 times. My dad graduated high school in 57, went to La Tech fall 57/spring 58, then transferred to LSU. There's one thing that stands out - that gets repeated EVERY TIME dad tells this tale, and surprisingly, it's not about what happened Halloween night. It's what happened the next week when they lost to Tennessee. Pretty sure it was the very next week anyway. Dad talks of how the LSU campus felt like an absolute morgue that Monday after losing to Tennessee. Apparently, there was some type of long Tennessee run (may have been an interception return), but the radio announcer (assuming Politz) was saying over and over "and Cannon is on the ground! Cannon is on the ground!

Considering how great that Cannon run was, and that my dads memory goes straight too the next weeks mood, almost feels like dads memory is the birth of negatigerism.

My brother was a recruit for that game on the team sideline. He has told me many times what it was like and the thing that stood out to me is he said the locker room was crazy and when Dietzel got in there he quieted them down and said remember Tennessee next week. And Cannon scored then also.

I was there. My first LSU game. I was four years old, and there were four of us attending the game (mom, dad, me, and my sister). I didn't know it at the time, but we had just three tickets. My mom just grabbed me up as my dad handed the ticket taker the three tickets, and we rushed on in. I had to sit in my mom's lap, so I was unknowingly a gate crasher for my very first game. Whatever the attendance figure was that night, it was off by one.

When Cannon made his run, obviously everyone stood up, so my mother picked me up so I could see the end of it, as Cannon crossed the goal line on the far side of the field. Being just four, I was getting a little tired after his run, so I told my mom "LS&U is ahead, can we go home?" I'm glad they didn't listen to me, though I really don't remember the play where Ole Miss was stopped at the goal line.

I was there ! ! !
My first football game at LSU was in 1950.
My stepfather went to LSU & feed & cleaned "Mike da Tiger's" cage while he was there. He left the the gate between him & Mike open once. I'm not sure which one - Mike or my stepfather - I'd be pulling for ! ! !
I was there for the Cannon run. It started right in front of our seats at about the 16 yd line. He wasn't supposed to catch anything inside the 20 yd. line. I didn't try to count, but I read he was touched be every player on the Ole Miss team him during that run. The ref ran stride for stride all the way into the end zone with Cannon.
The best part of that game was that, Ole Miss took the kick off after the touchdown - right in front of me - to about the Ole Miss 3 or 4 yard line - right in front of me again. They needed the touchdown, because we had a 4 pt. lead, & after we stopped them none of the players got up for several seconds.
The next week we played Tennessee at their place. As usual I listened to the game from N.O. on WWL radio. The game was close all the way. Very close the end of the game, Tennessee was ahead 14 to 7 & we scored a TD with very little time on the clock, & went for a 2 pt. run for a win. The ref said Cannon wasn't in the endzone . . . BUT, film later showed he did get across the goldline.
Back then most coaches didn't want their guys to spend a lot of time pumping iron, because the bulk would slow them down. I think Cannon worked out at the Alvin's gym in Baton Rouge & was a very good athlete . He was very strong & fast for a white boy. He won the 100 yd. dash & the shot put in the SEC championship ! ! ! BUT . . he & me, & most white guys, wouldn't have be in the dash.
I was at LSU after I got out of the USAF in 1966 & went straight to LSU from Greenland & finished in Industrial Management inthe Spring of 1970.

freshman that year, but long story (which I won't go into) I missed the game. Listened to it on radio at a Halloween party. One of the biggest mistakes of my life missing that game.

If you have lived on this planet since approximately 1941 and one of the biggest mistakes you have ever made was to miss a football game, you either have completely screwed up priorities or you have led a charmed life.

I've spent most of my life in Houston,Tx working. Did take a ten year trip on my 44 ft. DeFever trawler, mostly in the Bahamas. I did take it up to Washington, DC for a few weeks. That's a long trip, but we had a great time. Got to ride on Queen Nor's helicopter & saw all of the sites.

Wasn't born till 1961 so was not there but both my Mom and DAd were there and at that time they were huge Ole Miss fans being born in Mississippi and living in BAton Rouge at that time. My Mom's Dad , My Grandpa was a big Ole Miss fan and loved Jake Gibbs. When Billy Cannon made the great runback, mY mom was really concerned about my Grandpa's health and called him after getting back home and he replied to my Mom , "Oh Darling it's just a ball game. " Wish I could take it like that. My Dad still says, its the greatest run he ever saw and needless to say both my Mom and Dad because of my love for LSU became huge LSU Tiger fans and have been so to this day.

The guy in the referee's uniform who ran stride-for-stride with Cannon was actually a high school referee from Mississippi who just put on his uniform and walked through the gate with the rest of the officials. The others had no idea who he was, so he had to explain what he was doing. They didn't give him away, and he watched the game from the sidelines...until the excitement of the moment caught up with him and he ran with Cannon down the sideline.

There was a really good story about it in the Jackson Clarion Ledger about it some years ago, but I'm not sure if it's still available online.

I'd probably give a limb to have a ticket stub from that game in my collection.

I'll trade it to you for your right leg, seems like a fair deal.

Like others, I wasn't born yet, but my parents were there. Dad was a freshman, and they were sitting in the student section, so no ticket stub, LSU-MNCBaby.

This is what Mom tells me about the game. Her cousin and cousin's husband came down from Ole Miss for the game. They went to buy bacon for breakfast (my poor parents could not afford bacon), and when they came out of the store, students were rocking their car (with the Mississippi plates). So when they went to the game, they parked the car in backwards at married student housing so no one would see the license plate.

Wow! Did not know that, cool story. If he was a ref from Mississippi, I wonder if he was an Ole Miss fan or LSU fan.

Thanks to all for sharing. I've enjoyed everyone's stories.

I was thinking maybe he missed the game and met his future wife who ate his soul one bite at a time for forty years or something like that.

I was there. The Ole Miss drive, with sophomore quarterback Doug Elmore at the controls, had Tiger fans on edge for the final 10 minutes. The greatest run anyone had ever seen was about to be wiped out by the Rebel's third team quarterback. Warren Rabb and Cannon stopped the drive at the LSU 2 yard line. Tennessee played well for two or three minutes in the game that followed, coming from behind. An intercepted pass returned for a touchdown, and a recovered fumble on LSU's next offensive series, were the only breaks the Vols needed to score 14 points. Both Robinson and Cannon outgained the Vols that day. Wendell Harris missed two field goals ... not much longer than extra point attempts. Cannon still claims he broke the plane on the two point conversion attempt. It should not have gotten down to that. LSU should have gone for the first down or the touchdown rather than let Harris attempt the field goals. He did not practice the week of the Tennessee game and had missed a FG attempt against Ole Miss. The LSU offense was getting four or five yards a pop against the Vols that day.
