On the YouTube video it says Corbin Merritt "reclassed to the class of 2018". That's probably why he doesn't have major offers because he looks really good. We should still go after him but he won't help us this year.

Fair enough. I'd have him on the list for 2018. We will be absolutely desperate for post players in November, and there is no help available inside the state.

BTW, South Carolina appears to be the destination for the Zack Brown kid out of Miami, so that's a decision I don't expect we'll get to make.

Here's an interesting piece from the Memphis Commercial Appeal talking about the JUCO kids Tubby Smith is recruiting.

Among them is the Kyvon Davenport kid referenced earlier in the thread, who might be the top unsigned JUCO forward in the country. JUCORecruiting.com has him as the #19 player, but those rankings might be old. Here's a writeup from that site about him.

Another guy is the #48 player in those JUCO rankings, Raynere Thornton. He's out of Gordon State in Georgia, and he had an interesting stat line:

10.9 ppg
11.4 rpg
5.9 apg

He can't shoot much, though - .474 from the floor, only 23 percent from 3 and 57 percent from the foul line. And at 6-6, 230 he's a little small for the post. That said, he's got Kansas State, Iowa State and Nebraska along with Memphis.

They also have a couple of guards listed, one of which is Chris Darrington from Vincennes (20.7 ppg), who is #13 on that JUCO list. The other is Ron Freeman, who's a 6-5 swingman out of Northwest Florida State. He only averaged 8.2 ppg this year; I don't see why we would be interested in him.

The top player on the JUCO list is Shakur Juiston (6-7), who led Hutchinson to the national championship. He's uncommitted. Averaged 17.3 ppg and 12.1 rpg, 3.9 apg, 1.8 bpg and 1.5 spg, and shot 60 percent from the floor. Wade was recruiting him at VCU, but he's also got Kansas on him as well as Illinois, St. Bonaventure, Rhode Island and Seton Hall.

And here's another guy I wouldn't be surprised to see Wade take a chance on. His name is Tony Farmer, and he goes 6-7 or 6-8 and 235 pounds. He's out of Lee College, which is where Jenkins and Reath played and where Hamdy played when Wade found him. Benford also recruited that school at North Texas.

Farmer had a big year at Lee...

17.4 ppg
9.5 rpg
3.2 apg
.484 FG
.354 3PT
.689 FT

...but he's not all that highly-recruited. Why?

This is why.

He's a risk. He spent 3 years in jail out of high school for kidnapping and robbing an ex-girlfriend and nobody would take him to play college ball when he got out. But apparently he straightened his life out and hasn't caused any trouble at Lee. It might not be a good look for Wade to sign him right after coming here, but on the other hand, this guy is a grown man and could be a difference-maker at the 4 for somebody.

They need to sign Tony Farmer with the quickness, dude has nba talent, he made mistake as a kid and has moved on, he would probably lead the team in scoring next yr

I agree, but I doubt a new coach wants to take that burden and risk. An established program like Wichita may roll the dice.

I don't think it rolling the dice, dude should have never done time for what he done, I see what he did happens all the time and its probation to time serve with probation. They used him as a explain, he is not a street dude at all lol

It's a dilemma, to be sure. Signing him sends a signal that other programs will use to recruit against you, that you're a "thug" program and so on, and doing it as a new coach here is a risk.

That said, the kid can play at a very high level and Lord, does he fit within Wade's concept. If he's past the stuff that put him in jail and proves it, moreover, it's an outstanding story and Wade looks like Mother Theresa for having brought him in and managed him.

And if you could get Farmer in here to put with Blakeney, Sampson, Mays, Reath and Corey Davis and either of your freshmen Jones signed turn out to be good, you might actually turn up with a competitive club that can crawl onto the bubble if things go right.

I'll be interested to see how this goes, because Farmer is absolutely on Wade's radar (and Benford's, since he's recruited the hell out of that league) being at Lee.

Supposedly he wasn't to be back in Texas. Not sure if we are in the position to take any transfer that has to sit out either. Unless there is 2-4 guys looking to transfer

Did you not watch the video of him hitting his ex? It was premeditated and apparently another video shown in court of him stomping her head multiple times. He was waiting on her and when she sees him, she immediately is afraid trying to get away. I will be severely disappointed if Wade took Farmer. Yes he has paid his debt to society but no way in hell would I want my daughter at a school around someone like him. I'm pulling for the guy to turn his life around, just not at LSU.

It's bad footage, no doubt.

The question is whether he's still that guy. Three years for that one incident when it was apparently the first one was a pretty strong kick in the teeth.

Wade knows the coaches at Lee. If the kid has demonstrated anything like that kind of behavior I would hope they'd tell him. And if not, if he's learned his lesson, I'd be OK with taking a chance on him.

But he'd have to be on a short leash, and he'd have to be out of here at the first sign of a relapse.

Whether you want him at LSU or not, don't pretend that a campus with 40,000 plus students, faculty and staff, don't have a bunch like him and much worse.

The question that matters is can he give you a quality player without a repeat of that kind of behavior. And that's a scouting/vetting question.

If the answer is yes in an objective judgement, then you probably should take him.

What shouldn't be determinative is "optics." Saying "I don't want that in my program" when the evidence indicates the kid learned his lesson is little more than virtue-signalling. And while that might make great politics it makes for bad basketball.

Nobody wants "that" in their program. If Farmer won't give you "that," then it's not an issue. We ought to be at least open to the idea of a redemption story.

It's just my opinion but I think it's just too much of a risk for a coach in his first year here. It was just too violent of a crime for my taste.

I will say that the victim asked the judge to not give him jail time. But that doesn't change the fact of what he did. The PR aspect would be even worse. I don't think Wade will take the risk. It really would look bad.

Going 10-21 again because your scruples tell you you can't give a kid an opportunity looks worse.

Now - if he's a constant problem at Lee and they're putting up with him because he can play, I doubt any of us would support bringing him in. But that isn't the impression I get from the reading I've done.

Lawson brothers announced transfer from Memphis. LSU need to hire their pops.

Further damaging for the Memphis program is that there are two more Lawson brothers -- Chandler and Johnathan. One is a top-25 national recruit in the Class of 2019, the other a top-10 national recruit in the Class of 2021. Memphis had been recruiting both. Now neither projects as a future Tiger.
