Education wise, passing on Harvard to go to Maryland is much worse than passing on Maryland to got to LSU.

That's true as well. I hope no one was taking my comments like that. A LSU degree is very valuable, all I'm trying to say is sometimes, you have to look at the bigger picture.
Hell, I know some degrees from LSU may be better than Maryland. I would guess some of our engineering degrees maybe?

Harvard can't offer full scholarships for sports. So he wouldn't really be "passing" on Harvard.

They provide need-based grants (from their 36 billion dollar endowment) which amounts to the same thing. He wouldn't be going on his own dime (see this article, LINK).

I really don't think it's "biting us in the arse." TBH, the Franks thing is damn near all of our dumbass AD's fault. Franks made it clear the uncertainty is what made him switch.
