My main point in asking was to see if you thought the hook grip could be trained to improve. If you think it can, then I don't see how you could also think it erases the use of the muscles that a DOHG would use
I didn't say it would negate the muscles. I was saying that you still need grip strength in hook grip but not as much comparatively to a DONH because your thumb is taking away from the motion of the bar and not creating a longer moment arm and it is applying an opposing force to the bar.
I'll give some examples with arbitrary numbers.
Ex 1) You are using DONH.
450 lbs on the bar
If the bar magically doesn't rotate and you are holding the bar, you are exerting 450 lbs of force against the bar to keep it static.
Ex 2) You are using DONH.
450lbs on the bar
If the bar starts to slip and goes 2" (will be much less) along your fingers from rolling, you are now having to exert 900 lbs of force to keep it static.
Ex 3) You are using hook grip.
450 lbs on the bar
Bar does not slip due to the thumb preventing motion. Since there is no motion, you are exerting 450lbs of force to keep it static.

It's not a lot. I said over 405. Sorry bro, when I pull triples with 585, I use straps
My grip strength is just fine for what I do

so you can pull triples at 585 but feel the need to use straps with anyone over 405?

Yes . I even wear a belt on sets over 405 as well

right, but that is contingent on the bar actually slipping. Which A)is unsafe, and B)prevents you from the overall goal of completing the lift.

I dont disagree with you that DONH is tougher but i think you might be over thinking it a bit. That isnt what I was arguing, however. Maybe I just misread, but it seemed to me like you were alluding that the hook grip is not as beneficial to building strength as the DONH.
I think that the hook grip is equally as beneficial as the DONH in terms of building grip strength. Yes, I think the DONH will fail first. But comparing both with full grips on the bar are near equal from my experiences, both personal and watching others.

Well, Matt is a legit Oly coach, too.
I would expect it.

Lots of the guys I see at my gym are roided out of their minds
I'd say probably 75% of extremely strong people in most gyms are on some type of steroid.

I'd say that's quite a stretch.

It's really not. I mean extremely strong as in guys who do warmup sets with 315 on bench
In my experience most are on gear. Even if it's just a small dose of test

I don't know what gym you're in so I can't argue that but in my gym, there are only a couple gifs I would very are on gear and, while they look the part, none of them can hang with the few of us that are the strongest there. And we're 100% natural. Now this is a commercial gym in a small town so there's that

Squat: 405+
I could squat 405 but haven't in a couple years. I don't go over 315 anymore. Which I do for about 12 reps, but I just don't want to get injured. It's all for show now anyway lol.

My shoulder press is 225-230, but I can maybe bench press 235-245 at most.
No clue what my max is on squat or deadlift, nor do I care. I don't care what my max is on anything. Just want to look as good as possible.

What? How is this possible.

glad I wasn't the only one thinking that. Doesn't even make sense.

Because I never do bench press. I do crossfit, and that isn't a lift we do. But clean and jerks and so on, happens regularly. I honestly don't know why I am better with a shoulder press other than me just doing much more shoulder work (hand stand push-ups, push press, clean and jerk, etc), but I am being honest.
The only time I do bench press is when i go use the school gym on Sundays. And I'll put like 135 and do sets of 15. Maybe I can do more on bench, but I just haven't done that in a while. I did 225 a few months ago and barely got it up twice. It's just not something I do often.
