Would love a quick but technical explanation on why a switch grip (I'm assuming you mean one hand palm facing in, one hand palm facing out?) would not be good for deadlift. Is it only a problem at high weights, at my age and build I honestly doubt I'm ever pulling anywhere much over 400 lbs.

If you aren't worried about grip strength, just use straps. The reason people use a mix grip is because they either compete where you can't use straps or looking for grip strength. Since you don't plan on going above 400, just use double overhand and straps on the heaviest set.

it puts your bicep in the stretched position which is where it is weakest and most prone to tear. With heavier weights this can become a real possibilty.

I tore the long head tendon at the shoulder, but that wasn't from deadlifts.

I assume you mean tearing the lone bicep tendon at the elbow, not one of the two at the shoulder.

When I tore mine, I did the distal end at the elbow side.

Good thread. My standard (double overhand) grip sucks arse so I'll start there but end up shifting to mixed pretty quick. The last rep on standard going down my hands look like a frikkin eagle claw with fingers hanging on trying not to drop the bar. But the difference in how much weight is so significant I'd be much lower sticking to standard.

It seems like a few years the general consensus was that straps were bad for various reasons, mostly because they kept your grip from developing on its own.

The dangers of mixed grip are new to me but good to at least know of the risk. I'm only DL ~350, so not sure if that's still a risk at that level or if it's more for heavier weights.

yea the risk is tearing at the elbow.

amount of weight doesnt really matter. Its more of a tendon development issue. If your lifting is out paceing the rate at which your tendons and ligaments are progressing then it could become a problem.

From all the videos I have seen of it happening, it happened when they accidentlly lifted with the under hand to the point of almost trying to curl the bar up. not done on purpose but they let the arm become unlocked and become bent, transferring quite a bit of the bar weight to the lower bicep tendon.

If you youtube it, you can see the videos. Looks freaky and painful as hell. WOuld not wish that on anybody.

My video is less glamorous, as I did mine making a tackle instead of deadlifting. Initial pain wasn't as bad as you'd expect. More of a freakout thing. I didn't know what the hell was happening. I was the tendon shriveling upwards on my arm like letting the air out of a balloon. Started to hurt a whole lot later that night though.

vid of my injury

And yeah, I was fat as frick.

ould you incorporate a hook grip for anything other that say...cleans and snatches?

I use it for everything. Cleans snatches and deads

You won't believe the different it makes until you are pulling near your max and the bar isn't fighting you to go the other way because of slipping or poor grip strength. Yes there is discomfort when starting. Stop being a puss. Your thumb isn't ripping off

No thanks. Gloves never helped with my callouses anyway.

Perhaps I should try it again with lighter weight.

I was kidding. I heard start off with flexible tape and work it up from there.

I tried it all the way up to 315 for reps of 6. Not bad. Didn't hurt that bad.

Is this flexible tape to hide my junk since I'll be lifting with the girls?

What are your thoughts on a thumbless grip on bench press? It always seemed dangerous too me, but there are many people who recommend it.

Some say it hits the tricep more than a regular grip. Anything can happen though, ie: the USC football kid who had his throats crushed do to losing the bar while benching thumbless.

I use my thumb as I like to spread the bar and create a good foundation on the lats and stay really tight. I squeeze that bar as if I'm trying to hurt it.

Don't listen to those people. It's called a suicide grip for a reason. Properly place your bone of your palm in line with the bar and your forearm.

Going in for some deadlifts today. I haven't ever tried hook grip, but I want to. Better start using it while the weight is still lighter and get used to it.

Don't just try it though. Look up videos on how to do it. Get your thumb as parallel with the bar as possible. This helps with pain.
