re: Why was the Dreamcast not successful?

Actually I remember going back to SNES for a little while. Younger brother got a Dreamcast but my Mom made him return it. Older brother played the SNES with me and waited on pins and needles for the GC and bought it on release day

The 2nd game i owned for PS1 was Ape Escape. It's the first game I know of that required two analog sticks and did it well. Wasn't possible on the N64.

They just recently ported it to Steam, so if it's on sale in one of the inevitable sales, consider it.

Ape Escape was/is the shite.

quote:Yes. A game that requires two analog sticks for integral action commands in any direction is not possible on the N64
wouldn't have been possible on the Nintendo 64 because the N64 didn't have dual analog sticks?

GoldenEye is a decent game in a genre Wolfenstein or Doom or Duke Nukem invented
That was really easy

quote:I don't know what your point is. I'm simply saying a game like Ape Escape could have been made for the N64 using the C-buttons instead, though you would lose some accuracy. A similar example is the game MDK2 on Dreamcast vs PS2. On the PS2 you used the right analog stick to aim and look around. The Dreamcast's controls, lacking as many buttons and a second analog stick, were modified to fit the controls. It wasn't as accurate as the PS2 version, but it was still a playable game.

Dude. That main appeal of Ape Escape was the kick arse way you controlled it. So that port would've sucked balls. I'm not sure it would actually be playable. At least not without tons of frustration or simplifying the game drastically

frick this thread, I want a Dreamcast immediately.

quote:You're probably right. However, the fact that very few games have employed that type of control mechanic outside of Ape Escape (and...Too Human, I guess) indicates to me that it was more of a novelty than anything, especially since every system now has dual analog sticks.
So that port would've sucked balls.
Maybe Sony should dig up the franchise and give it another shot though?

ETA: Actually reminds me of something that would be more at home in a Final Fantasy game than anything.

The full song in case anyone wants to time travel back to 9/9/99.
And the lyrics in case you'd like to sing along.

It was the golden age of gaming IMO.

NES and I share the same birth year. 'Twas meant to be.
I was in my prime when the 64 came out so it holds a special part of my gaming life. I'll admit I'm a little sensitive to N64 criticism.
So many hours of playing Mario Kart, Mario 64, OoT, Cruisin' USA, Blast Corps, 007, Pilot Wings, the THQ wrestling games, Star Fox.. sheesh it's hard for me to think of a game I didn't like on the 64.

Consoles had personality and charm back then. The games were necessarily short so they had to be highly creative, secretive, challenging, and addictive in order to be good. The idea of how many HOURS a game is didn't exist, it didn't make sense. You want to beat some of those games you had to work at it. You can't just casually pick it up for a few hours each weekend. And you worked at it because you loved it and the challenge was fair. And we got SO many of them. I really think the NES exemplifies it best, It's my personal favorite. They just don't make* games like that anymore because they don't have to.
ETA: nearly AS MANY games. I'm aware that there are still some games that would fit that (like Portal or Dark Souls)
