Can you clear a whole city in the game, or do the orcs just keep regenerating new captains and what not infinitely?

Each area has fortress. You can take the fortress with your dominated captain and if you win you control the city.
At that point all of the orcs within the fortress are yours.
Later in the game, the dark forces lay siege to the captured fortresses over and over again. If you die during a siege, they retake the fortress and you need to take it back.
It is fun but the Act IV Shadow War goes on for too long with 20 sieges.
I've done 13 and I am worn out. The last Siege was insane with enemy captains all the hell over the place. I evidently had a pile of mortal poison captains and nearly lost half my captains to spiders.

I need to get back into this game, but AC Origins got me hooked. That said, SoW is still an amazing game, a great hybrid between Assassin's Creed and the Batman Arkham games.

I played a good bit this weekend, but that World Series, man! Haven't stayed up late to play in several nights. I'll get back on it tonight.
I'm just hitting level 39. Took the first 4 fortresses. Shamed and killed Brun.

I finished Shadow Stage 8. It was nuts. The first siege was easy because they didn't break the walls or gate. The second siege broke the walls and gate. Enemy captains all the hell over the place. 5 level 50+ captains and a huge pile of level 35 -49 captains everywhere.
I imagine stage 9 and 10 are going to be ridiculous.
Finished 9. Just 4 more sieges and the game is over.

One siege left from Stage 10.
I've had a great time but they needed to work the Shadow War into the main game. A few sieges here and there. A few quests. rinse and repeat. That would have been more palatable than 20 straight sieges.

AC Origins outclasses this so much. I will go back eventually but Looking back, I think this game is pretty overrated. If your systemic, then it gets super repetitive, nemesis system or not. I'd go into a region and take over all the orcs my level or lower and then just use my body guard to kill them all that I couldn't take over. Use betrayal to take out the warchkefs.

I disagree. I think it is rated where it should be. Great fun combat with the new twist being the Sieges which are fun and at times stressful. Story is better than the first game but it goes off the rails at the end. Especially the final ending where it just inexplicably jumps to an unsatisfying conclusion.
Without the loot crap it would be a solid 9 out of 10. However, the loot crap does drop the final rating. Not because you have to use or pay for the loot boxes but the entire Shadow War 20 sieges was just tacked onto the game to try and force folks to buy the loot boxes. The Shadow War doesn't fit into the plot in any way. Almost like they had a completed game and the bean counters said "add loot boxes and hide a weak ending at the end."
I had a 9 of 10 fun playing the game but knowing how shitty the loot boxes are, I would drop the rating down for the average player to 7 out of 10.
I would also tell people to skip the shadow war and just watch the final clip online. Or maybe play a few rounds of the war then hop over to youtube to watch the finale. The sieges are fun but 20 in row is just too much tacked on at the end. I still had as much fun as I can get out of a game. Just felt a bit cheap at the end and they really didn't know how to bridge this game with Lord of the Rings. Big fail on story meshing with LOTR.
I didn't mind most of the poetic license they took with the story, just didn't like the HUGE jump they made at the very end.

Yea I quit after conquering the second fortress and realizing how repetitive it was going to become.
I'll go back and try to finish it after I forget how repetitive it is. Or when I get a Lord of the rings itch.

Guess I need to check out origins when cod ww2 loses its shine

I think AC Origins feels so much like a lived in world than this and for open world games, that's the fricking g point.

I really liked Shadow of War but the repetitiveness is wearing me down. Gonna stick with AC Origins and COD WWII for now

Ending was not worth the grind.
Immediately took the disc out and popped in Origins. Having a blast with it.

They couldn't come up with a legitimate bridge for the source material so they went with that crap. I can guarantee you the original game was supposed to end with Act III then the bean counters wanted transaction so they came up with Shadow Wars and pasted a weak cinematic to wrap it up.
I enjoyed the heck out of the game but understand folks who don't like it or don't want to fund any game with micro transactions.
Even if not needed, they clearly messed with the pacing / flow of the game.

Also ticks me off that we can't totally control Minas Morgul. Once you clean out the Nazgul it should be no different than any other Fortress.
