I'll probably go back and replay it when I'm done with this one. I don't care about story continuity because while I love the LOTR films, I don't find this game's story compelling and I'm just playing for the gameplay.

Fight Pits?

I've had crap luck with the Pits. I still don't have my first victory. Hell, I keep having much higher level captains get curb stomped.

Also, betrayal followed by Blood Brother retaliation keeps decimating my army. This is getting more than a little annoying. They need to add a damn skill that increases loyalty.

Really? I had all 3 of my pit fights turn out as victories, even when one of my captains was under-ranked by 3 ranks.

I've never found a video game's story compelling outside of The Last of Us. However, I find this story is intertwined enough with the LOTR to keep it interesting.

Doesn't matter much if you lose because you can jump in the pit and dominate the winner.

I like the story to this point. Of course we know things won't end well for Talion.

I said earlier, it disturbs me how sexy she is even though I know she is a giant spider.

It seems like multiple factors play into if your captain wins, loses, or betrays you, not just rank level. like his strengths and weaknesses, if he killed you before, who his blood brother is, etc. lots of factors that seem to go into the equation. finding it easy to get bogged down on over-analyzing the different factors in a fight or picking my go to dominated captains. the over analyzing has seemed to give a high success rate in keeping the captains I want to live alive. it's also annoyingly time consuming but enjoyable at the same time. loving the strategy aspect of it and the expansion of the wraiths ability's in combat. it's like playing as a two person team in combat many times. definite improvement over the assassins creed combat rip off from the first one.

best game I've played all year. better than horizon zero dawn. plus shadow of war will have much more staying power with its ability to make each encounter different with random orcs.

Finally won the a dang Pit fight. I guess I just had terrible luck with the previous tries. My guys weakness must have been the weaker guys strengths.

Didn't have a betrayal last night so that is good. Been doing a lot of death threats to try to up my gear a bit but no luck.

Is anyone actually using the legendary gear? Seems to me like the bonuses aren't as useful as the epic gear. At least none of the purple gear I found to this point.

I have a legendary dagger that sets victims on fire. Any captain I find open to stealth with a fire weakness has gone down quickly with it.

I'm still on the first area in act 2, but most of the army is mine now. Will be trying to take out the warchiefs tonight.

I have a dagger that does the same but is several levels lower than other options. I won't use anything but the dagger. It's perfect for caragors.

The first fortress you take in act 2 is like a give-me fortress. Basically for practice. Taking out the warchiefs makes it that much easier.

In hindsight I wish I hadn't spent so much time prepping for it.

Love how there are individual regions and each one is different. Much better than one massive open world. Different regions in a Mario game comes to mind.

Hope future DLC adds new regions to conquer.

That is an easy skill to get on numerous other daggers / swords. Does anyone use them for the set bonuses would have been a better question because none of the set bonuses seem to be very helpful. At least none of the weapons / armor I have found.

Pro tip: After you conquer the first overlord, go to the winter area next. The volcano area orc captains will be too high level.

Also in a new region I've got into a successful rhythm of first unlocking the viewing point haedir's and finding intel along the way to learn about the new orc captains.

I actually just went and took the original fortress we messed with in Act 1.

You already killed the captains as part of the main quest so I just needed to recruit 4 captains and then destroyed the thing easily with 4 level 27 pals.

Plus the warlord there was only level 20.

When I am looking at the army screen and there is a red line between two orcs, I assume this means they are blood brothers?

No betrayal tonight because I've either killed both orcs linked by a red line or recruited them both.

Hmmm....looks like red line is they are dueling each other and white is bodyguard / blood brother?

Should I stay in Minas ithil for as long as possible, find all collectibles, do the mini quests/tasks, and then do the Cirith ungol quests?

Or should I move far into the story to level up quickly?

Also, since I'm in act 1 I can't build armies yet. Is it ok if I kill all captains in Minas ithil for xp and hear?

If you played Inquisition and stayed in the Hinterlands for 30 hours and were happy to do that, then yes, collect everything. If you hated the Hinterlands, move along the plot.

I pretty much gathered everything in Ithil. Finishing artifacts, towers and shelob gives you a point for each. So that is 3 points per area just to do some searching. Those 6 points come in handy in the first two sections when you are still learning the game and regularly getting stomped.

But, it really depends on what you like. I enjoy just wandering around looking at things and killing everything I can.

Also get a point for the mid level reward for all of Celebrimbor's memories. So that is another pile of useful points per area.

Forgot to say, I killed all of the captains up until I could finally dominate them. I was more interested early on in getting good weapons and armor upgrades so kill away. Or be killed. I had a pain in the arse Nemesis until I was high enough level to finally kill the bastard. He got me 3 or 4 times before I could finally take him out. And that was only after I leveled up enough and used my points.
