I'm confused. Is this board not a fan of Batali? I mean, not saying he's in the best living chef category, but some previous comments seemed to carry an air of snark.

I used to love Mario Batali. He was somewhat of an idol of ours until we got to meet him personally. Tried to talk food and it was very clear he was nothing but an average cook that happened to hit it big with a niche and the upcoming food network scene. Big fat redheaded dork who wears shorts in the kitchen and grotesque orange clogs. He didn't know a damn thing about the food we were cooking...and it was all northern Italian cuisine.

I find this exceptionally hard to believe.

I agree.

This anti-Batalli rant is unusual. He seems to have good relationships with other respected chefs.

I would be surprised if he was merely an "Average" Chef.

Took me by surprise too. I have his Molto Mario cookbook and almost every recipe I've used has been wonderful. And I've cooked probably 60% of it.

You guys were wondering why there was an "air of snark" towards batali. I told you why I don't care for him. He may very well be the baddest chef to ever walk the earth but the man came off as a hack to me. Sorry y'all don't like my opinion of him. Is it really hard to believe that these celebrity chefs can be hacks? For Christ sake Guy Feiri calls himself a chef and owns the largest restaurant in the country. There's a big difference between the guys who win James Beard Awards and the personalities you see on television.

It has nothing to do with "like" or "dislike"...

...sounds like total BS. Had you posted "Yeah, we tried to discuss French cuisine with Batali and he really didn't know anything about it"...but, "northern Italian"? Come on.

I don't know about best, but my favorite is John Folse.

He cooks my kind of food, and i can listen to that man talk cooking for hours.

Grant Achatz- Alinea Restaurant - Chicago Hands down the best chef in US! Read his story most compelling....5 yrs post Tongue cancer.....MD Anderson wanted to remove the tongue so did John Hopkins and so did Mayo Clinic...not a good option for a world class chef! Got in a trial at University of Chicago with high dose radation to tongue...Docs gave him 2 weeks to taste and document all foods, soups, sauces and veggies....cause the high dose radation was sure to kill his taste buds forever and it did ! He now prepares 12 course heavenly meals by past experiences! This guy is a true chef! I've eat there on several occasions and if you have the opportunity I would recommend it highly! You got a big birthday or anniversary comming up make a trip there and it will be the greatest dinning experience of your life!

I'm not a huge fan of Batali in conversations about greatest living chef, but I find it hard to believe that he's a "hack" without skills or knowledge.

I would imagine the person who met him mistook his disinterest in communicating with them for ignorance.

I saw Peyton Manning at a bar one time and went up to talk football with him. He didn't really have much to say to me about football, so I'm pretty sure he's a hack without much knowledge of the game.

Right now I'm into Lidia Bastianich and David Chang.

eta: Batali is greatness.

Well Guy Fieri doe not have the largest restaurant in the country but I'll give you he's certainly no chef. Nor is Alton Brown as he graduated in I believe cinematography.

Batali has be cooking in kitchens since college, went to Cordon Bleu for awhile, apprenticed under Marco White of all people, opened Po which was a huge hit before hooking up with Joe and Lydia Bastianich and building an empire of total Italian food. To claim he's a "hack" shows your opinions worthiness of which I commented about.

He's not an average chef, he's a really really good chef. He's also a great business man.

Is he the "best living chef" though? Not likely. I don't know how that's an "anti-Batalli rant".
