College buddy of mine posted this on Facebook this morning:

"This salt or sugar debate has reached my 9 year old daughter. She asked me last night if sugar goes in grits. I did what any responsible father would do and told her the truth:"

"People who put sugar in their grits are all going to a sugary hell with diabetes drawers. According to all religious texts, it is an unforgiveable sin and the reason Lucifer was cast down from heaven. Any person who puts sugar in their grits will lie, steal, kill, and destroy. They were spoiled arse kids who threw temper tantrums, so their parents put sugar in everything just to get them simmer down. They killed Marvin Gaye, Tupac, Biggie, Michael Jackson, and Prince. They are called the Sweetumnati and Young Thug is their supreme leader on Earth. They are forever disconnected from the Most High. There is no heaven for them. The Ancestors will not embrace them. They are doomed to walk the earth as ghosts if they do not repent and turn from their wicked ways."

Yep. It's a common known fact that people who eat grits with sugar also wear cargo shorts and T shirts in 30 degree weather.

You a black guy? The only person I've ever seen do it was a black buddy, I was eating breakfast with one time, and when I looked at him like 'wtf are you doing?', he responded, "oh, you've never seen a black person eat grits, this is how we do it."

Pretty common in GA, atleast in my neck of the woods. My wife is from SC and the first person I ever saw eat salt in grits.

What's your college buddy's stance on cheese in grits?

Y.A. ... nope, I'm not black, I'm white. I went to a black college, and my Wife is black.

It's not a black thing, though. The black community is equally up in arms about this bullsh!t. The guy who posted that is black.

I'm actually surprised that so many people on this board were unaware of this. Yes, it's a thing. I've known about it for years, and it's not a racial/ethnic thing ... it's a geographic thing.

Yeah, I was always curious about his statement because I'm pretty sure I've seen other black people eat grits and NOT do that.

He was from the Houston area, if that somehow plays into the geographic theory of this nastiness. Who the hell knows?

First time I saw this (or even heard of it) actually WAS on Southern's campus.

A bunch of us were in the dining hall one morning, and this guy from Dallas was sitting across from me, and he was about to pour sugar in his grits ... as his potna, I reached out quickly and grabbed his wrist. "DUDE, that's SUGAR, not salt! ... you're about to fugg up your whole plate!" I told him ...

He was like, "good lookin' out, but I know. I put sugar in my grits."

The second he said that, it was like the whole room stopped and went silent. All my other friends from New Orleans and other parts of Louisiana looked at him as if he had just come out of the closet.

My best friend, who was babysitting for my son, fed him sugared grits one day. I hardly knew what to say! Haha, I kept my grateful mouth shut, but inside I was all like, .

And we were raised in the same south Louisiana town, so I don't know where she got that from.

So, we've established it could be a black Texas thing, I guess.

Everywhere in the South other than South LA. Sugar in grits happens all over the place. I'm not saying it's good, or that I agree with it. But it is quite common in most parts of Dixie Land.

i prefer salt or cheese grits, but there is nothing wrong with sugar and butter in it, but it really doesn't taste like grits anymore. Its more like a breakfast dessert. Kind of like hot buttered sweet rice, its good just not something I like everyday.

bring the down votes bitchs and yes I was born, raised and still live in south LA.

I'll give you an upvote.

Born and raised in New Orleans and always grew up eating them sweet with sugar and butter.

Wasn't until later that I started making them with salt, pepper, and cheese; and I probably enjoy them more that way.

That said, grits were never a staple in our household and don't do much for me now as an adult.

It's pretty common here in N Alabama. I prefer salt and pepper myself. Most folks put butter and sugar in them (like Arkantards do to rice for breakfast).

ETA: my wife ALWAYS asks for cheese grits. I'll allow it.
