I love my mamma dearly, so for her birthday, I wanted to take her out to a fancy pants dinner. We both wanted to try somewhere we'd never been, so we picked Jacmel Inn.

Jacmel looks like it's in an old house, and it's so pretty. You walk down a winding path through a garden to reach the house. When you enter, you feel like you're in someone's home. Beautiful exposed wood, dim lighting, and a burning fireplace, make it very welcoming.

Our server was nice, but I felt he could've been more polished for that level of restaurant.

To start, we had the French Market Oysters, which is fried oysters on top of creamed spinach, andouille and anisette. Holy cow! This was DELICIOUS!! I wish I had an entree size of it.

We also ordered the turtle soup. It was disgusting. It tasted like chili, and was very watery and greasy. The server prompty took it away, and it didn't appear on the bill.

For my entree, I had the scallops. They were seared and cooked perfectly. There was a special of a filet with lobster knuckles in butter on top My mom asked if she could swap out the filet for a ribeye. She was told that it wasn't a problem, but there might be a slight price difference. Great! While her entree tasted great, I was SHOCKED to get the bill and see that they had upcharged it $17!!! I found that to be absolutely outrageous because they special was already the highest priced entree to begin with at $33, so to not tell me that the price difference was going to put that entree at $50 was just inexcuseable. I didn't want to address it there because I didn't want my mom to feel bad for ordering it. I did call the restaurant to complain about it, and the manager was sympathetic and agreed that I definitely should've been told.

For desserts, we got bread pudding and crème brulee. Both were pretty good.

The grades:

ATMOSPHERE: A+
FOOD: B
SERVICE: B-
VALUE: C (I would've given this a high grade, but can't due to the $50 entrée)

Where is this place? And maybe you shouldn't be eating at these types of places because it seems you have a habit of complaining about prices.

I agree with you on the atmosphere and look of the place. I really love it and the outdoor eating area is really neat when the weather is nice. It's neat place. You do feel like you're eating in someone's home with the various rooms.

I ate there not all that long after it opened, I believe. I know it was still relatively new. Could have been a few years old, though it was still new to Hammond. The quality then was better than the quality the last few times I've eaten there. I feel like the dishes are hit or miss depending on what you order. Some things I really liked and some not very much at all. The last two times I was there we had a group of about 8, I believe, and service was a little spotty. It was a very busy night of graduations as I recall.

Wow, I have eaten there since college, probably 1985ish. It has always been good in my opinion. I love the atmosphere.

Nice review. Being you're from New Orleans, might be worth mentioning this place is in Hammond.

I didn't eat there that early on, so maybe the folks I was with still considered it new or maybe it was because it was the only nice place in town at that time. I remember there was something about it at the time. I could be wrong about it being that new, though. It wasn't in the 80's.

It is a pet peeve of mine: even specials should have clearly stated prices. Is it so hard to write them on a board, menu insert, etc and clearly list the price? People want to know. If you're in the hospitality business, you don't want to piss off the customer. Your waitron should have asked the manager or kitchen about the specific upcharge and reported it to you. A person who can't comfortably discuss prices has no business being a waiter.

Found an old post of mine. I last ate there in 2011. I had a veal dish that wasn't very good. Very mundane and now I recall that I didn't eat much of it. Just wasn't very good. We ate with locals and a few told us of some dishes they didn't recommend we order. There were some very good dishes and some that just weren't anything special or not all that good. Like I said, it was a very busy night. The place was packed.

The time before that, I believe I enjoyed everything about my meal.

We ate at a place called the Steakhouse several years ago and it was quite good. Not a fancy place and very enjoyable.

The Steakhouse is amazing. I lived in Hammond for several years and visited regularly. I highly recommend checking it out. You pay by the ounce so you can get whatever size filet, ribeye, or NY strip you want. I've only ever gotten steak, but I haven't heard anything bad about their other entrees.

Last couple times me and my wife have been to Jacmel we have been underwhelmed by the food. We prefer to go to Tope La (Tuesday night is lunch menu pricing). Also tried out Roux and Brew (Ponchatoula) recently and was impressed by the food/value.

Great tip about the Tuesday lunch pricing! We were considering Tope La, but she really wanted to go somewhere she'd never been.

I've never been to Tope La. Sounds like a Tuesday night visit is in order!

I was just thinking this. Her rottweilers definitely do not drink Moet.

Went to Jacmel back in 2012, and split a 48 oz ribeye topped with lump crabmeat with my boss. It was good, but I hurt myself that night, had to take the day off of work the next day
