Spahr's in Des Allemands is likely the best I have ever had. I really enjoy Crawford's, since it's called C-Fish on the menu, I suspect that it is swai.

I think medium the best then thin, then slab.
Mmmm.
It’s one of my favorite things really, catfish also perch, sacalait, etc.

Back in the day there were the coolest “catfish houses” around SELA. Poole’s Bluff was one.

Considering the source, it makes sense. Dude probably tries to eat his own elbow all day.

Nobody likes whole fried catfish?

That's the only way it was cooked in our house when I was a kid. My dad caught them and cleaned them by skinning and then just gutting them. They were fried whole in a black iron pot.

Back when I was a kid, not many people would filet fish, but after I started doing it, that is the only way I'll cook fish now. To hell with dealing with bones and uneven cooking with the thin tail meat and thick meat near the head area.

Place on the Cooper River outside of Charleston used to do all you can eat whole small catfish. Corn meal crust, delicious. Always ate the crispy fins first.

Amen. People on this board love to rag on Middendorf's, but I guess the constantly packed crowds disagree.

Same here. I had their thin fried catfish for the first time about 30 years ago and loved it and that is what I order when I go there.

The wife and I only get out that way maybe once or twice a year, but make it a point to stop there to eat when we are in the area.

See I didn't care for it. Ate at the Manchac location and it was way over-fried (to me) and tasted of old grease. But they do well with it so more power to them.

I also never cared for Spahr's catfish. Just thought it was bland.

you misspelled 'whole catfish'

We call that collarbone where I'm from. Blakes deli in Thibodaux sells a buttload of fried fish. Everybody assumes it's catfish but it's basa.

If the menu doesn’t say “catfish”, I won’t eat it
