Where (neighborhood/general area) will you be staying in each city?

Paris - Located in the most Parian area : 5th, near to saint germain des pres, Latin Q.

Barcelona - Just next to Plaza Catalunya, in the Old City (GOTICO QUARTER, ciutat vella) of Barcelona.

Rome - somewhere downtown, close to the colosseum i believe.

I enjoyed browsing in Le Grand Epicerie, the food department store of the Bon Marche department store in the 7th (Sevres-Babylone metro, 38 rue des Sevres). It was a good stop for snacks/provisions, plus all sorts of edible souvenirs. Products from all over France, too. LINK

Bookmarked for the Barcelona recs because I will be there in 3 weeks. And this time I won't be a poor backpacker.
Anyone been to San Sebastian?

Years ago, but unfortunately was a poor backpacker and missed out on most of the excellent food. Also, we were using it as a base for Pamplona.

However, that whole area is abundantly rich with fantastic food.

Barcelona is an awesome city, however I say this with caution. Half the people who go there (in my experience) dont like it for one reason or another.

Paris - Best restaurant city in the world IMO. One of our favorite restaurant rows is Rue St. Dominique near the Eiffel Tower. There are dozens of excellent restaurants within a few blocks of each other. I will name a few: Le Violon de Ingre, La Fontaine de Mars, Le Fables de la Fontaine, Chez L'Ami Jean, and Café Constant. We like Chez George on Rue du Mail. The best and most expensive meal I have ever had was at Guy Savoy. The prices are astronomical at night but they have lunch specials. As for Rome - a good casual restaurant near Piazza Navona is Enotecca Cul du Sac. It is a small wine bar with delicious food and an encyclopedic wine list. Hosteria Costanza just off Campo de Fiore has delicious food in historic surroundings. It is built among the ruins of the old Theatre of Pompey which is where the Roman Senate was meeting when Brutus stabbed Julius Caesar there in 44 B.C. I can give you more in Paris if you tell me what neighborhood you want to be in, but the metro puts the whole city at your doorstep. Have a great trip.

Rome recs: Roscioli (the bakery and the wine/foodshop/cafe), Antico Forno in the corner of the Campo di Fiori for pizza bianca, Fatamorgana for gelato (via Laurino near piazza Polopo), the new Testaccio market....

Spend a couple of bucks on the Katie Parla restaurant/food app for Rome. Well worth it. I've been to and also recommend all of the above. Took Rome food tour from Parla's group. Awesome experience. I'd add Pizzarium to the list too. BTW I believe Parla is on Andrew Zimmern's show on tonight.

Just as an aside, I've always found going to 2 or 3 star Michelin spots for lunch is a better proposition. Couple of reasons:

1) Personally I prefer a leisurely lunch to a drawn out dinner. When traveling you will sometimes be exhausted by say 8 pm, right when you might be able to get a reservation at the same restaurant.

2) Its generally easier to get a lunch reservation than a dinner.

3) Its usually a little bit less expensive, but no less of an experience.

4) The restaurant is likely not trying to turn the table as they would be at dinner so the meal is more relaxed.

Come to think of it, pretty much every meal I'd put in the Best Ever Category have been lunches: l'Atelier, Cinq Sentits, Gramercy Tavern, Carme Ruscalleda's San Pau...

I agree. I have had the lunch specials at Guy Savoy twice. Spectacular dining experiences. Another one like this in Paris is Le Cinq in the George V Hotel. Prices are pretty reasonable at lunch provided you don't drink too much. Unfortunately we drink a lot.

+1 on the high end for lunch. This can be an especially great strategy if you are traveling in a country like Italy, where a lunchtime closure (risposto) of shops, tourist attractions, churches, etc is the norm. You don't want to be wandering around just after lunch trying to find something to do when every damn thing is closed up tight until 3 or 4 pm. Go have a nice, long lunch, then a little rest/nap/stroll...

Touché. Thinking about it, I went to l'Atelier for dinner and did not enjoy it nearly as much as my lunch at Guy Savoy.

Antico Arco was our favorite restaurant in Rome, it's located in the Trastevere neighborhood, in southern Rome. Trastevere has a "neighborhood" feel to it that you don't really get from the rest of Rome (in my opinion), and is located on the Tibre River. We walked from The Vatican City area, which is a trek but really enjoyable. The restaurant is small and the food is very good.

Side note and very random but Meredith Vieira was also there eating at one of the other 10 or so tables in the small dining area

Tickets in Barca was one of the best dining experiences I've ever had.

you know, we just saw the El Bulli episode from anthony bourdain, and Tickets was one of the featured restaurants. It looked mighty, mighty interesting, to say the least.

Can you give some detail on your experience...ie, how hard was it to get a table, what was the pricing like, how many courses, etc?

Barcelona- La Paradeta near the Sagrada Familia. Awesome seafood and very reasonably priced.
Sagrada Familia is a amazingly beautiful cathedral.

I also enjoyed some seafood tapas in la boqueria in las ramblas
