My dad use to do this for an oilman back in the 80s, he would pay him $500, my dad had to pick up 2 sacks ($20 each at the time) and go shuck them at his house parties. Good money back in those days for a couple hours work.

Do you need 2 shuckers?

I'm embarrassed for you. Buy one of these:

And a box of oysters...butter, garlic, parm cheese...it's literally as easy as grilling hamburgers.

Two boxes if you have a crew. Get em while you're passing through...

Of all the reasons to be embarassed for me, hiring a oyster shucker is the least of them.

Seriously, I don't feel like doing the work, none of it. I have two nights over there and don't want to spend half a day procuring the needed supplies and oysters. Just want to pay someone to show up and take care of everything.

We rent houses on 30A and preparing these as an app over drinks would be the fun part, though we've never specifically done oysters...it's something we do at home though. We scalloped in Appalachicola and cleaned/baked those last time, the prep and cooking and enjoying each other's company is the fun.

Having someone else come in a private trip because you can't or won't cook for yourself is bizarre to me. The lack of empowerment is why I said I was embarrassed for you. The wording was probably too strong, but again I can't really imagine wanting chargrilled oysters, it's a good idea, and not having them because you can't find someone to do it for you.

ETA: In your defense we've hired people to do this for us multiple times at Saints tailgates...because ain't nobody got time for that shite when you're tailgating.

I used one of those shucker gadgets and after a dozen or two I threw it away. Little flakes of shell break off as it is splitting the shell in two.

These tiny pieces fall into the meat part of the oyster and you can't get them out unless you do a lot of washing.

As I said before go to a oyster bar and talk to some of the shuckers to see if they would do it.

I worry about you folks. Throw away a $200+ shucker because you can't use it correctly?

You're supposed to use it on the hinge(where it's not paper thin), break the seal (without crushing the damn thing), then take a clean oyster knife to open it fully while cutting it from both sides of the shell.

I swear...you people.

I also worry about people who can't fully comprehend. I said it was a shucker gadget, I didn't say it was the one you are showing. The one I had cost around $40 and was given to me. It had a wood base that broke after the first oyster, I repaired it only later to find out it sucked at shucking. I told the guy who gave it to me to come pick it up and he said no just throw it away which I gladly did.

Shortly after I invested in a custom oyster knife with a mesquite handle tailored made to the size of my hand. I can now open with a similar pace as those who do it for a living.

They're pieces of shite. I shucked thousands of oysters throughout college and all those shuck-o-matics did was slow me down. Much more efficient to get an experienced shucker with a glove and a blade.

Op should be able to find someone in Florida, especially for 2-3 sacks. That's nothing

I'm just asking for someone that shows up for a few hours and shucks and grills. BRget offered to come on the trip.

Honestly, it is fricking great to get a private chef to come in and cook, for one meal, for a half dozen couples on vacation. Especially if there are kids involved.

I'll do it for a spot on the couch, half a bottle of Ghost, and a ride around the block in the Jeep

Those suck too. Main benefit is its easier to apply downward force for the initial penetration, but the benefits end there. The blades break very easily and it's hard to get leverage when the heel of your palm isn't against anything. You have to rely on grip strength while torquing downward and the fatigue sets in very quickly.

This is my dear friend Becky.
She takes the summers off during down season, but give her a shout.

She's worked at Rio Mar and Hi Hat and done a bunch of our websites as well. She's legit.

You don't know what you're talking about. It's true that it's easy to apply downward force because you have more surface area of your hand applying the force. But the best part is the torque. It's like using a wrench instead of a screwdriver to pop the hinge open. Then you just slide the oyster around to cut the top and bottom attachment points.

The opposite is true.

You must've had one with a larger gripe that allowed you to use the heel of your palm. They gave us ones exactly like in the one in your pic to use for a private party and we all switched back to knives in 30min. Just not the same precision or speed
