Telling someone to tip 10% when the norm is 15-20% is not reducing a waiter's pay by 5-10% considering that their tips are probably 90% of their income. So with that being the case, if you reduce that 90% by 50%, then they are left earning 55% of what they made before.
That's a far cry a 5-10% cut.
I'm glad someone else noticed the gross errors in math within this thread.

Nice to see racism now creeping into the Food board.

Is it racism or realism?

I hope you read the whole damn 6 page thread and realize there is a whole lot more going on to this discussion.

I have always thought tipping (to insure promptness) was necessary to keep the service ball moving. Then I spent some time in Paris....
Tipping in Paris
The French don't tip at all and it works pretty well. Yes, sometimes people leave a little extra, I sure did, but no one complains if you don't.

Yeah, if you leave them a buck, it's a good tip. However, the food is more expensive, so you pay it either way. When I was there a Coke was like $4.50.

might have been some shipping cost in that

Yeah, there must be some huge tariffs on it or something, but I promise I'm not exaggerating the price.

so after a server tips out about 3-4 % of his tips he is left with about 7 % thanks to Oprah. That means on a 100 check you make 7 bucks, thats total bullshite
This is what I dont understand, why is this bullshite? If a waiter has 2 $100 tickets in an hour makes $14 according to your calculations plus the $2 the resturant pays you equals $16/ hour that most waiters don't pay taxes on what is wrong with that?
Also the whole tipping on % of ticket never makes sense If I go to Ruffinos and my wife and I order a salad, an app and a pizza to share, ticket equals $45, if we order salad, app, steaks the ticket could be $120.. the waiter does the same work for each why should he get 3 times the tip because I wanted a steak?

Just the price of dining out. You should also tip on your alcohol too.
I think servers these days have to pay for a certain amount of taxes based on sales.

Nonsense. If it's my restaurant, and you don't do your job the way I want it to be done, expect it to be done, then I'll find someone who will.
I'm assuming you've never owned a restaurant.

And, it's one that should be made, in my opinion
If you can pull it off, you'll be a billionaire overnight, and a hero/savior to the industry.

I do not like the custom of tipping. Period.
Love it or hate it, it will never change, unless you want to pay 15 bucks for your burger.

I just don't see how according to the restaurant folks that I have talked to about this. You have to know that the total price the customer will end up paying is going to go up to at least the amound they are paying now including tip.
You as an owner are going to have to pay someone $10 to $12 an hour to get someone at least halfway descent, then you have to pay all of the crap to the gov. above and beyond that.
If it was such an easy switch, I think more places would have went to this system.
In the end, you have a very bad issue with getting service people right now with half a brain and an ounce of motivation. If you take a way the incentive, they be gone to another field and then you are stuck with stoners.
Correct.

LOL. I hate oprah, and cheap people. My kinda thread. I tip well, regardless of where I go. Even when I get crappy service, I know that anyone, anywhere could be having the crappiest of days. If they truly suck as a server, they'll prob get stiffed enough by everyone else (which they should be). I just think of all the times I've gotten my arse handed to me on the floor, when I was trying my hardest to make everyone happy, and it SUCKS =)

I don't think many people understand how hard it is for a restaurant to staff up, especially a smaller restaurant. They have one of the highest turnover ratios of any business out there. To say you are just going to fire people and hire good ones just isn't a reality it most cities.
I read once that Emeril tried to make drug testing a requirement to work at any of his places. That went over like a fart in church and was done away with pretty quickly.

shite, you'd have to fire half the staff at most restaurants.
It's also funny that he'd do that, since I've heard from more than one person that they've done coke with him. At least back in the day anyway...

Crazy thing about workers compensation insurance...there is hardly anyone that will go to the emergency room from the staff because they wouldn't be able to pass the drug screen...so they just clean themselves up and put a bandaid on it.
