If you can afford to go out and eat at a restaurant "in the current economic crisis" where you'll be waited on, you can afford 18%+ tip (barring an awful waiter/waitress).

heaven forbid, the wait staff take a 5 to 10% "pay cut" like a lot of other people are having to do ... it is certainly better than the alternative which would be to just outright lose your job ... a lot of people right now are avoiding going out to eat for a reason ..

Doesn't this equate to a double-whammy on them, so to speak, though?

Yep. Less diners is already meaning more money out of their pockets.
I would prefer to still tip well and let the good servers make money based on their performance while driving the idiots out of the businesss.

I guess, but when you are start encouraging most of your viewing base to tip 10% or less, many of whom are bad tippers to begin with(women and minorities), they now are going to think 5% to 10% is ok.

Here's what I don't get. Growing up I always heard 10% - 15% was the rule of thumb, then within the last 10 years or so it seemed to jump 5% out of nowhere. Was I raised wrong, or did the service industry pull a fast one since any cost of living increases would theoretically be handled by rising meal prices and any merit raises would be handled by providing superior service and getting a bigger tip (or graduating to a better restaurant).

So would you rather a lot of customers tipping at 10% or a handful of customers tipping at 18%? Seems to be a win win situation if more people dined and tipped 10% to me..

10% from canadians would be a huge improvement IMO.

on the other hand, she could have advised her massive audience to stop going out to eat all together. frankly, that would be a much more effective way for people to save money in hard economic times. when you look at it that way, the 10% recommendation isn't so bad after all.

Is anybody really not dining out, solely because of what they think they have to tip?

Not me. I mean how much does that really equal on your average meal.

shite, just keep the better servers on staff and let the bad ones go if you have less diners, but let the good guys still make some good money.

well you are adding 15 to 20% to something that you are already paying four times more for than if you fixed it yourself at home ..

Without tipping for a service such as this, you provide no incentive for someone to perform their job better. By just providing a flat rate for some smuck to run your food too you, you end up with worse service than we already have now at many places

Let's say I own a restaurant and I pay my employees a good salary...
How about if that smuck does not do his job properly...I fire him....after all I am now his source of income. The incentive would be the same as in the non food industry...do your job well and get rewarded...do it poorly and get fired.
